You wouldn't happen to be the Alain from the ASOG would you? Either way WELCOME! to the group! Seems we all try to share the info we have. But also seems, a few have WAY more knowledge than most of us on the Forced induction thing going on so we are learning/feeding off of them. So jump on in!

There are a lot of misconceptions about premium gas out there. Gas Octane is a measurement of ressistence to pinging and nothing more. It does not give you better performance or better gas mileage. Check the link below for all the facts. Beware that pinging can damage the engine so that using as octance below what the manufacter recommends can lead to engine damage.

The knock sensor will pull timing if it detects predetonation but the engine has to do it for the knock sensor to kick in. In other words it is after the fact of predetonation. It will save the engine but it is still not good.

The dealership had lower octane in mine when I bought it and I could really tell the difference when I put the 91 in it. Between the 2 issues, performance and potential engine damage, why not just spend the extra couple of bucks when you fill the tank? You bought the turbo for performance I would assume.

I have noticed a slight ratling noise coming from my engine when I step on the gas to accelerate (not from stop) in my stock 2003 PT Turbo. In the last 3k miles I've had the Cruiser I've just dismissed the noise as some "wierd" sound a Turbo charged car makes. I have used mainly 87 octane fuel during those 3k miles. Today I put half a tank of 91 octane (highest available in the area) and the noise has been reduced significantly but has not stopped completely. Is this light racketing sound the dreaded "pinging" or "kocking" or is it something else? If so, have I damaged my engine in some respect? From here on out I plan to use 91 octane fuel whenever I can just to be safe.

My take...you are what you eat.
If you eat fast food, you'll have clogged arteries, be obese and generally more tired. Feed yourself right and you perform and function better.
Why do that to your car. 91 or better for me. Esp. if manufacturer suggests.[^]

Hey, PTGT Redman, how are ya?

When I bought my car, the dealer filled the tank with 87 octane. The sales guy seemed surprised when I showed him that 91 was recommended.

Anyway, I put in 91 for my second tank and could immediately notice the difference in power and performance. I haven't put in anything less than 91 since, the difference was too dramatic (at least for me) to ignore. Like someone else said, the cost difference is negligible so why not give your car what it really thirsts for?

when I got mine they put 87 in her...I didn't start putting 93 (don't have anything lower around here) in the next fillup and noticed a difference too...
