Well as far as i can tell, the carpet wont come off. I guess i could "shave" it off but that still leaves teh question of "how to make it smooth" this is a spare shelf so im a little more willing to fubar it.

i dont think bondo will stick as well as fiber/gelly/resin
but i also dont think that there is a sandable primer thick enough to be worth while over the carpet.

HMM
Shaving don't work. I tried. [:I]

I personally wouldn't have a problem trying the fiberglass resin directly on the "carpet". Pour/brush it on and sand it smooth.

It sounds as though you plan on painting the shelf with a matching color or maybe a mural scene. Those wood shelves are quite paintable with primer and automotive type paint, too.

Its getting painted black with "Geek Edition" in PT letters in electric blue.

part of my reluctance to get a wood one is the $100 price tag. the other part is that i need the SNUG fit because im getting a system installed.

I talked to someone that works with fiberglass yesterday and he reccomended using atleast one layer of cloth to avoid the carpet poking through the resin. Ill start that part of the project after thursday ( payday)

Have you tried sanding it? I've got an extra shelf, I may try that tomorrow.

Sanding sounds like a bad idea... and the wood for me too was too much for what I wanted to do. I rather find somewhere that they could (forgot the name for it) heat a peice of plexi glass up, then drop it over the object and suck out the air to get a mold of it. That would be helpful. Then I would just use that or pour fiberglass and spread it in the mold. But I doubt i'd find a shop around here that has one.

Nuts...[:I]

Sanding BAD! didnt work at all. LOL

OK, this ive figured out. FIrst layer of resin needs to just be spread over thinly to keep the carpet from frizzing up. then i started adding the next layer of resin and so far that seems to be working well for smoothing it out.

ill put more updates later

Not much to see. go get a jar of honey and pour it on. thats what it looks like lol

i did find out that if you take masking tape and put it on the hard plastic parts. the Resin wont stick to it, so you can pull off the runs.

I will post pics of the last few steps
