My girlfriend bought a used '04 Base model PT Cruiser. I was surprised that there is no steering wheel safety lock when car is parked; the steering wheel moves freely. Is this so for just the Base model? Is there a simple part or two that have been left off that could be installed that could have the steering wheel lock in place, or would this be a major replacement operation? (If I were the president of Chrysler reading this post, I'd invite all who would be in a similar situation to have a locking steering wheel installed AT NO CHARGE!)
Any comments appreciated! Thanks

Pretty sure it was standard equipment across the board.
Pretty sure that the locking pin was the cheapest piece of pot-metal they could find, and it probably just broke. I wouldn't worry too much about it. It's not like the locking steering column caused massive reductions in auto thefts. Just don't got advertising it to your local Thieves Guild.

Here's a link I found claiming there is no steering wheel lock on Automatic Transmission vehicles:
![]() 'The steering wheel lock mechanism in the column (automatic transmission vehicles), was eliminated in July 2002 however the change still complies with NHTSA requirements. The mid year change affected some 02 models, and all 2003-2006 domestic PT's. Additional model year changes are available through the Pit area on the site.' ptdoityourself.net PTDIY.net - PT Cruiser Technical Library Part Fifty Seven Q&A 1401 - 1425 |

The steering wheel locks are still on the PT Cruiser. However, they changed the engagement point for it. Your steering wheel as to be either turned fully left/right before it engages.
I have a 2006 base model (Manual) and didn't find the lock until those points. |

I was surperised when i purchase my 2010 Classic and the steering colume didn't lock. I took it to the dealer and they told me they quit putting them on all new Chrysler cars. I went to another dealer to "test drive" one and it didn't have one either. Neither did the 2010 Caliber I test drove. |

I have to turn my wheel 180 degrees left or right before it locks. That is what it says in the handbook if fitted
