Just think of it this way...the charger can convert the voltage...but will only be converting and using significant energy IF SOMETHING IS PLUGGED INTO IT TO "DRAW" ENERGY THROUGH IT!

I had to prove it to myself so I just hooked up my PT battery to a meter (a steady 12.08 DC volts ) and then pluged my cell phone charger into the live socket. The charger even has a small red light to tell you when it's pugged in and there was NO change in the reading of the meter. NO draw n the battery at all.
Cool. Always good to have experience-backed science! I thought after I posted that there may be a small change for an unmeasurable "leak" of power as it was be converted, but since he tested it, all is good. Thanks!

My son leaves his phone charger plugged in all the time in his 90 Dodge Spirit ES and has never had to call dear old dad for a jump. I come home at night and there is always a red light on from his charger, so I guess you can use that as a sworn testimony..lol.

I have an 06 GT and it does have an outlet in the bottom part of the console and I plug in my cell and it draws very little when I only have my converter pluged in I can't see any dishcharge. Oh yes the outlet is hot at all times.

Well not quite, anything that is a charger will have a slight draw on it, such as say a dc convertor for a walkman etc. I was actually quite surprised that this was mentioned yesterday during the "Answer the Call" parts during the huge Concert for the Environment yesterday.

Check out your fuse box and owners manual. On my 06 turbo lite I can put the fuse in two different ways - always one, or on with ignition!

I leave my phone charger plugged into my console plug all the time. I have had it plugged in for about 10 months now and have yet to have a problem.

Yes, but if you left it plugged in for ten months without starting the car, it would possibly drain the battery. There is no big draw from the cell phone on it, but it does take some current to keep the little light on it lit. That's all that I was saying.
