Default Center High Mounted Stop Light

Help! I went to change the bulbs in the center stop light and when I gave it a gentle tug they broke off. This happened to two of them. I left the third one in, afraid that would break too. The bulbs were scorched and brittle. Can someone tell me how do to get the rest of the broken pieces out?

Not sure why that happened but whenever I get a broken bulb like that I use a needle nose pliers to grab hold of whatever I can and turn it clockwise or just pull it out, whatever works.

Worried about colateral damage from a spark if you grab both contacts?
Simply disconnect the battery first.
