remove the allen screw, use your hand as a slide hammer, hit it 2 or 3 times, HARD then if it is not off, grab the ball ((((do not Twist)))) pull up now it should be in your hand.

May want to mention you're talking about the Auto shift knob. Manual has no allen screw, it's just jammed on there (earlier models it's sometimes glued as well). Roughly the same procedure just need to remember to duck when it comes wingin' off the shift lever.

Thanks for the info. But I found a different way. With a car less than a month old, the shifter knob came off in my hand all by itself while I was driving. No hitting, no allen wrench! Simply amazing! Oh well, if this is the only problem I have then I will be pleased.
