Default Auto Shifter shaft

Does anyone know how hard it would be to drill into the shaft, or if it would be wise to do?

isn't there linkage inside the shaft that attaches to the button on top? if so, i wouldn't drill into it.

that's what i was thinking, i mean i didn't want to drill all the way through. i just wanted to break the surface. See i got one of these and it doesn't stay after i tighten the screws so i was thinking of trying to make grooves or hole so that that it stays in place.
