Question Rear latch Problem Catching

Hello everyone, hopefully this is the right forum. My 2006 Touring is having an issue with the right side of the rear hatch sticking and catching on the shock.. When you lift the hatch it catches and pops onthe shock then slowly rises up. I've inspected the shock and have found on the rod that is is rusting at the very bottom . Now has there been problems with the lifting systems(shocks) and is there a better part Ican install to lift the rear hatch. I want tomake it as eesy as possible to rise due to my many lower back surgeries. As soon as the weather clears up I will take some pictures of the shock on the right to show the problem area,or at least what I think it is.
Has anyone else heard of orhad this issue?

i replaced both my hatch struts 2 weeks ago on the wife's pt due to popping and her's was rusting on the bottom as well.

you can also use sandpaper on the rusted area to smooth it out. had to do that to my 2002. worked out pretty well.

So after 6 years one the struts is failing. Things of this nature have happened before and will again happen on most of the cars on the road today. It's not just the PT. That being said, if I were you I would change at least just that one as soon as the the weather permits. Simply because it makes no sense to wait.

As was said above, using sandpaper will probably give some temporary relief, but you're going to end up replacing it sooner or later.
