I am going to attempt to paint a lower grille for my '06. It's made of TPO (Thermoplastic olefin) and from what I have read it needs to be CLEAN and have an adhesion promoter added before painting. Has anyone got any ideas or tips??

You're correct in the clean a adhesion promoter. There are some great silvers in the wheel paint suppliers. These look great and natural. Unlucky universal silvers of yesterday. You can use a gloss or Matt clear coat to make it look even better.

It's weird, but I swear that I had another thread going where I showed the progress of painting the Lower Grille. I can't seem to find it, and the site only lets you go back 20 pages, so I can't see last October's posts. Hmmmm...
So, here are some photos that I took, and I have to mention that I masked off and then painted the edges where the silver bled under (and the smallest of) the small solid triangular areas with flat black paint, because they looked goofy if I left them silver. I started by washing thoroughly with soap and water, then drying, rinsing and drying, and then used a grease and wax remover, and drying, and sprayed on some adhesion promoter before spraying the silver. I hung it up to dry for a few days before touching it. I then did a spot test on the back side with clear-coat, which killed the cool 'machined aluminum' look to the silver. I've seen your progress pics before, too.
![]() I thought they might be in the: What Are You Working On Thread? But they weren't: Post #9723: What did you do to your Cruiser today? You started this thread in Aug '16 but then posted about the finished work in Oct '16 in the other thread. ![]() Last edited by rckstein; 04 May 2017 at 10:26 pm. |
