Default My "Special" spare tire.

I've been thinking about doing this for a while after reading different posts about the early aluminum spares and the interest in them. My 2001 LE came equipped with one of these.

Boring, right?

I started back on the Ranch-E-roo project, getting ready for paint. So, while I am sanding on it, I decided to sand on the wheel also. In my down time.
[IMG][/IMG]
As you may notice, it is very coarse. You can see the grooves like in an old record.
[IMG][/IMG]
At this point, I have been hand sanding less than an hour with 180 grit paper.
[IMG][/IMG]
The next evening, a little more progress.
[IMG][/IMG]
Now an angled die grinder with some 3M abrasive material for the tight areas.
[IMG][/IMG]
As of yesterday evening and about another hour hand sanding and using the grinder with the abrasive material.

More to come as I get closer to polishing.

Lots of work for something that not many people are going to see.

I may be 55 but I still work about 50 hours a week. This is done in the evenings and weekends.

VsandFords. Good for you. I follow the same premise in all my endeavors. I have all my life. There's a sense of satisfaction to that.

When at the end of your aluminum wheel odyssey, it'll reflect the sun like a signal mirror and you'll put it down under again in it's place, waiting, no hoping for your next spare tire emergency, knowing it's there shining in the dark under your PT.

I'd advise a good acrylic clear coat when your done to preserve the shine and prevent aluminum oxidation.

I'd warn the service man doing your next oil change as he puts your PT Cruiser on the lift. You don't want to blind him with the shine!

I have three of those aluminum spares. I can't wait to see how pretty you make that one. Surprise shine is the best shine!

I've had to use the spare once and the black stands out too much from the chrome wheels. I am debating using a clear coat or a good wax. The clear would be more trouble free, but a polish and a couple of coats of wax looks good. I do my own oil changes, having a lift and all the other required tools.
