Default Auto shifter modification

I always thought it would be COOL to have a TALL shifter like you see in old hot rods/rat rods. I built one using things I had in the shop.
[IMG][/IMG]

Simple. I used a piece of 1/2" electrical conduit, 1/4" brake line, PT shift knob and two 8/32 machine screws.
[IMG][/IMG]

I drilled two 9/64" holes in one end of the conduit and tapped them with a 8/32" machine tap to mount the set screws to attach the new shifter handle to the shifter shaft coming out of the console.
[IMG][/IMG]

I used the die grinder with a ream bit to enlarge the hole in the shift knob so the conduit would slide in.
[IMG][/IMG]

I drilled a hole in the top of the new stick for the set screw to mount the PT shift knob.

The brake line goes inside so when you push the button, you are able to move the shifter.

Last, I sanded the conduit starting with 180 grit sandpaper and finishing with 500 grit to give it the polished look. Clear coated it because it is metal and didn't want it to tarnish.

This also works with the "cobra" shifter. Start by cutting off the plastic sleeve.

Use the die grinder and ream the handle so the conduit will fit.

Someone that is good with leather could make a sheath to cover the stick.

There you have it. Easy-peasy!!!

The GREAT thing is that you can make them any length you like. I also built a cobra shifter at stereo height. You can swap them out in less than a minute if you have the tools for the set screws close.

I believe you have done the first on a PT. I have yet to see another in all the pic I've seen. 😎 Like that you kept it cheap to do. 😊

This is SUPER COOL - would look great in my 'vert with the shift ball painted teal to match my dash.

Damn, I'm never gonna get this car done...lol

Yep, pretty cool idea.

Although for the life of me I can't understand why anyone would want to make an 'Old Skool Hot Rod' out of a PT Cruiser.
