Fluid has been inspected and looks brand new, clear red no burnt smell. No history on the filter, it will be the next maintenance item.

I think I have determined it is not the shift solenoid though, the issue only happens when the speedometer flutters. Starting from a stop the speedo doesn't always react at the same speed as the car, occasionally it will not react until 10-15 miles an hour and then it jumps up and the transmission will get "confused". Once above 20 it operates normally, issue only seems to present itself if I try and take off too quickly from a stop. If I ease into it when under 20 mph it does not happen. This leads me to believe it is the output speed sensor, which is on the list to be replaced.

Outside of that circumstance the transmission behaves normally with no faults. I have had the issue randomly as long as I have owned the car, little over a year now.

Finally fixed the speedo/transmission issue, got around to investigating the speed sensors. Output speed sensor was just dirty with metal filings, not an excessive amount looks like normal wear for a car this old, cleaned the sensor off and put it back in. Car now behaves "normally", no more stuttering or jumpy speedo. Next maintenance item will be dropping all of the "pans" and replacing gaskets. I noticed both trans and oil pan leak when I was underneath the car, coming from the pan gaskets.

Stripped the threads on the oil pan drain hole when I changed the oil........................

Was able to get the bolt to grab, so I blue loctited the shit out of it and let it sit for 24 hours. So far no leaks its been about 4 days, If it holds I'll replace the drain plug with one of those oversized bolts that cuts new threads the next time I change oil.

Finally found a black front bumper and grille in decent condition. Got it installed, and was able to find a black center dash/radio trim. Next project is going to be taking my old dash trim and retrofitting a double din stereo.

The Slug has found a new home, I was given an 06 Jeep Liberty that's in gorgeous condition. So we "sold" the Slug to my wife's best friend who needed something more fuel efficient.

Thanks everybody for the advice and assistance with this project, and I wish you all the best.
