Default Rear turn signals?

I never got this maybe somewone here can explain it to me........

Why is it that some cars maninly american made have red turn signals, but some have orange (amber) ones. Is it a style thing? I "perfer" them to be amber, but i could care less. it is just easier for me to tell what is happining.

There's no law in the U.S. that says the turn signals have to be amber....while overseas it's mandatory that they are. Manufactures that sell cars overseas and in the states find it easier to have them amber and only make one lense for both here and there. I had to change my turn signals in my Vette to amber (see pic below)when I took my car to England and then left them that way when I returned. When the newer Vettes are exported overseas GM actually change the tail lights to conform to the laws.

And because of that the CHEAP SOBs running the US Auto Industry into the ground FINALLY had to spring for extra wires and light bulbs to separate the Brake Lights from the Turn Signals....

IMAO the Amber 'eurospec' is just one more example of how backwards US automotive lighting standards have been, (IE: Requiring pathetic sealed beam headlights while the rest of the world had high-quality halogens)
AND REMAIN: Canadian market PT Cruisers have the mandatory daytime running lights, but DC doesn't even offer it as an option on US market PTs, we also cannot get those nifty side marker lights in the US.

I agree with the Amber, but HATE the daytime running lights. The idea is safety, but if taken to it's logical conclusion, the mom on her cell phone will be able to ignore everything except your new car with Neon Orange paint and roof-mounted flashing lights. Motorcycles need them, cars and (especially) full-size trucks DON'T!

Agree w/Fritz and Purple.
Amber was made law for the front signals - they used to be clear - sometime in the 60's. The third brake light was made law.. 80s? but the rear turn signals SHOULD be amber. The red option allows for the REALLY cheap cars that use one light for brake and turn - bad news if the guy is tapping the brakes while turning because you don't know which blink is which...
It's really academic - I see lots of people that don't use the turn signals anyway.... Pet peeve of mine... I always blow the horn when they don't - I figure it's the least I can do ..
