Default code reader

Has anyone purchased a universal code reader. I have a Ford, Chevy and Subaru (+ the PT which you can read the codes) and I'm looking to buy one. Are they worth it and are they universal. The Ford keeps getting a check engine light but I'm pretty sure its from moisture. only comes up every couple months.

Most of them are good, but can be expensive.

I use the Davis CarChip, which really has been a big help on other vehicles. You plug it in the OBDII port and it records 75 hours of driving information, and then download the information on your PC at home. Very easy to use It's $139.00 on their website, but I picked up a brand new one on Ebay for less than $50.00
Luckily have not used it on the PT Cruiser since I have had no problems (knock on wood), but I have used it several other cars for friends and coworkers, and right now its on my brothers LHS to look at an ABS problem he is having. One nice thing is you can also use it to clear codes that normally the service department has to clear.

Here is their address

Autozone, AdvanceAuto, etc, read codes for free. I've taken my son's car and wife's there - they plug into jack under dash.[:I]
