U.S. tipping Mexico to Minuteman patrols
By Sara A. Carter, Staff Writer
Inland Valley Daily Bulletin

While Minuteman civilian patrols are keeping an eye out for illegal border crossers, the U.S. Border Patrol is keeping an eye out for Minutemen -- and telling the Mexican government where they are.

According to three documents on the Mexican Secretary of Foreign Relations Web site, the U.S. Border Patrol is to notify the Mexican government as to the location of Minutemen and other civilian border patrol groups when they participate in apprehending illegal immigrants -- and if and when violence is used against border crossers.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman confirmed the notification process, describing it as a standard procedure meant to reassure the Mexican government that migrants' rights are being observed.

"It's not a secret where the Minuteman volunteers are going to be," Mario Martinez said Monday.

"This ... simply makes two basic statements -- that we will not allow any lawlessness of any type, and that if an alien is encountered by a Minuteman or arrested by the Minuteman, then we will allow that government to interview the person."

Minuteman members were not so sanguine about the arrangement, however, saying that reporting their location to Mexican officials nullifies their effectiveness along the border and could endanger their lives.

"Now we know why it seemed like Mexican officials knew where we were all the time," said Chris Simcox, founder of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps. "It's unbelievable that our own government agency is sending intelligence to another country. They are sending intelligence to a nation where corruption runs rampant, and that could be getting into the hands of criminal cartels.

"They just basically endangered the lives of American people."

Officials with the Mexican consulate in Washington, D.C., could not be reached for comment Monday.

Martinez said reporting the location of immigrant apprehensions to consulate representatives is common practice if an illegal immigrant requests counsel or believes they have been mistreated.

"Once an illegal alien is apprehended, they can request counsel," he said. "We have to give their counsel the information about their apprehension, and that includes where they are apprehended, whether a Minuteman volunteer spotted them or a citizen."

Martinez said Mexico's official perception of the civilian groups is that they are vigilantes, a belief the Border Patrol hoped to allay by entering into the cooperative agreement.

One of the documents on the Web site, "Actions of the Mexican Government in Relation to the Activities of Vigilante Groups," states that Mexican consulate representatives stay in close contact with Border Patrol chiefs to ensure the safety of migrants trying to enter the U.S., those being detained and the actions of all "vigilantes" along the border.

"The Mexican consul in Presidio also contacted the chief of the Border Patrol in the Marfa Sector to solicit his cooperation in case they detect any activity of `vigilantes,' and was told to immediately contact the consulate if there was," according to the document.

"Presidio" refers to Presidio County, Texas, which is in the Big Bend region and a gateway to northern Mexico.

The document also describes a meeting with San Diego Border Patrol sector chief Darryl Griffen.

"(Griffen) said that the Border Patrol will not permit any violence or any actions contrary to the law by the groups, and he is continuously aware of (the volunteer organizations') operations," according to the document. "Mr. Griffen reiterated to the undersecretary his promise to notify the General Consul right away when the vigilantes detain or participate in the detention of any undocumented Mexicans."

The documents specifically named the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps and its patrols, which began monitoring Ari

That's WRONG on so many levels... [V]
Incredible...
What they should do is say they're going to patrol one place, than actually patrol another place...

The worse enemy a Mexican can find in the U.S. is another Mexican, the Minuteman leader in Imperial Valley is a damn Mexican Native, a Pocho that is, an I can't understand the hate grown by that kind of people just as soon as they get their Green Card, in the next months thereafter they forget how to speak Spanish correctly and they speak an awful and rude English, or a mix of both languages, and I'm no talking about all Mexicans, but mostly.

But how sane is to HUNT people? The United States society is formed mostly by immigrants, and the poor people that tends to get across the border are only seeking for a job, nothing else, they do all the labors repudied or not wanted to be done by Caucasian or African-American population, you never see "red....." or "n......" picking up lettuce or strawberries at the fields, and those people, the farmworkers that is, do this is because they know how to do it, possibly they do that because they already done that at their homes, assuring high productivity and low prices for the American housewife buyer.

Immigrants are not criminals, they're not there to sell drugs, or kill people, or to do bank robberies, or assault a grocery store, they got there to work only, work hard and send money to their families and support them.

The minutemen think that immigrants get across the border and STEAL their jobs, ok, don't they think that the employers prefer clean, strong and capable personnel, than lazy junkies?

Huata,

I agree that many immigrants are VERY hardworking, however, some of them are criminals (just as many Americans). I live in Houston, TX and we constantly hear of drug cartels smuggling and warring with border patrol. So, it's not like ALL immigrants are coming here to work hard. As I said, the majority are hard working and are a VERY loving people.

Yes, you hardly see other minorities and Caucasians working in fields, but remember, 30 years ago, this was prevalent. "Whites" and "Blacks" and other minorities used to tend their own fields when Latinos weren't. This started when our government didn't want to pay the appropriate wages for the work. So, Latinos, with the diligence to receive better lives, came to work in the fields for almost any wage.

However, today this is not the case any more. Latino Civil Rights groups began to stand up for Latinos; and in their defense, had wages raised (which was and is the correct thing to do). And this can also be attributed to many "Blacks", during the Civil Rights era/"Jim Crow", who paved the way for all people who encounter and will encounter all sorts of discrimination.

To our detriment, our American youth do NOT know ANYTHING about hard work! I am fairly young (20's) and I know my generation has a lot to learn about being appreciative. But, my parents are very hardworking and have taught me to be the same. I know about harvesting fields and crops (we've had crops on our land) and I am "Black", as well as a few other things. So, yes, Latinos are hard working, BUT they are NOT the ONLY ones who are.

How come you left off the word "illegal" as in "illegal immigrant" when you discuss this? An immigrant is someone who enters this country "LEGALLY". Anyone who enters this country by sneaking in is illegal. I have no problem with legal immigrants. I have a huge problem with illegal ones. Why do people confuse the two? People who enter this country illegally are criminals. They have broken the law.
The only reason illegal immigrants are doing low paying jobs is because by being in this country illegally American businesses can exploit them. How can you support this? If they were legal they could not be exploited and wages and working conditions would have to improve. If wages and working conditions improve then Americans would be willing to do those jobs, too.
