Default a/c recharging $500.00....

I almost fell over when i heard this... I took my car in the '87 Honda Accord in to see about getting the A/C recharged, it dosent blow cold at all. They told be when i said what year it was that it was going to be provided that is the problem that it's going to be over $500.00 becuase it's an "R-12" and it uses the "old style" freon that the EPA deemed "unsafe for the enviroment." I could't believe it, i thought i would post it on here and see what others thoughts where. Because it just couldn't believe that this was possible. I got a reply on the same post on another forum saying they were b/s ing me... What you all think? [:I]

No bull, r12 production was banned a while ago as it was accused of eating the ozone layer.

http://www.heinleys.com/a_c_and_freon.htm

so your choice now is to
a- buy Really Expensive r12 to refill an air conditioner that is old enough to vote (and maybe have it leak right back out in a matter of days).
b- pay a bunch of money (possibly more than the car is worth) ONCE to have your College-Aged AC retrofitted to use the New, Ozone-Friendly R-134a

I changed my '88 Sundance to R-134. Autozone had a generic kit for around $25.00- 30.00 This included a 2lb (?) can of R134, and the different sized fittings.but NO seals. I tossed in a can of a/c stop leak recharged the system, and enjoyed the cool. I think I spent mayhaps $50.00 total.

The drawback to doing it this way is the old compressor, evaporator, etc. won't be as effective as they were engineered for r12. But if it keeps you cool for 50$, it's worth it!

I guess thats the difference between a Classic and an Old Car.

I had an 86 Merc converted about 5 yrs ago. Cost me 188 and the car would freeze meat in 90 degree heat.

Ahh.......... POO! I guess i don't need it that bad, however i am planning a trip in it soon to somewhere hot and was hoping to have it done. How much do you think it would be to have it moved over to a R-134a? I am willing only to put about $300.00 into it. I could save up that kind of money. Remember i only paid $500.00 for it.

500 seems high to me.I guess it depends on where you live.
I only use the A/C when the wife is in the car.

Your best bet is to shop around locally for an r134a conversion. Honda is a pretty popular car, and they do tend to last a long time, so you might find some local a/c or honda specialists who will do the job for less $.
