Too telling quotes from the article:
"Police said the Sunbird driver, identified only as a 17-year-old, could also be charged because he stopped in mid-turn while trying to cross traffic."
This might not be the simple 'evil street racers' story.
But most important of all:
"[the victim] was not wearing a seat belt"
Ahem.
Please remember that even Princess Di would have survived if she was wearing a seatbelt.

True, 17 yr old driver stopped mid turn. Also true that all 17 yr old drivers are inexperienced. Even experienced drivers have a hard time judging oncoming traffic if it is speeding. If you don't realize oncoming traffic is speeding you can easily misjudge the time you have to cross traffic safely. Speeding traffic comes on you so quickly your brain might not adjust to what you are seeing, especially at night. All you see are headlights coming your way. His drivng inexperience only made it worse. Bottom line, street racing plus other driver's inexperience = accident.
True, the victim should have been wearing a seatbelt. My kids were taught from the very beginning to wear a seatbelt. They went nowhere without one when riding with anyone. Unfortunately, kids don't always listen. Her mistake compounded the accident's results, but if no street racing, no accident. She will remember her stupidity for not wearing a seatbelt for the rest of her life.

Wrong. This is your typical evil street racers' story. People make mistakes all of the time while driving. Street racing compounds those mistakes by other drivers. How many times have you read where an innocent driver pulled out in front of speeding cars, even in broad daylight? It is the most typical cause of street racing accidents. Innocents don't expect other cars to be going 20, 30, 40, 50+ mph over the speed limit. I have seen, first hand, the results of street racing gone bad. There are pictures burned in my memory that I will never forget.
