Default why do some folks like LOUD?

Okay, this is a (reasonably) legit question: why do some people want their cars loud? I can understand a little why motorcyclists want a bit of extra noise--- just to make it easier to be sure the rest of us know they're there!--- but the cars and motorcycles that blast? Sorry, but I just don't get it. It's not performance, it's just volume: just plain old noise.

Ditto the people who love to blast their sound systems: fine, you've got a great sound system, but why force the rest of us--- who may very well hate that particular music!--- to listen?

Please don't think I'm against someone being happy with their car/motorcycle/sound system: I just plain old don't understand why they want it so loud. Thanks!

Actually, in a lot of cases, loud goes hand in hand with performance. My Neon SRT-4 comes factory with a turbo and no muffler. It does come with a resonator. A turbo'd car loves no restriction at all in it's exhaust system. Is my car loud? Yes, when I open it up and I never get on it in neighborhoods and cities. Other performance cars have performance exhausts that benefit their high horsepower cars. Now there are cars out there, mostly imports, who put on a loud, noisy exhaust and call it good. These cars are still slow, but loud. A lot of it depends on the driver and how respectable they are towards others. Some people just like to be annoying.

All they would really need to do is enforce the laws that are already on the books. The word would get around fast enough so the idiots that play their "ice" so everyone has to listen to it would soon quiet down. Here in my county if the sound system can be heard more than 50 feet away, you can be cited for disturbing the piece, but it isn't enforced.

As far as exhaust, there's also a db limit from a certain distance but it too isn't enforced.

Okay, I'll concede some of the noise is performance-related; but all the rest? I mean, do wackos actually think the noise makes them look cool or something, as opposed to "oh, look at the rude inconsiderate jerk!"

My town has noise limits too, especially in the narrow streets of the historic area; but no, no enforcement, dammit. And let me tell you, it can really reverberate in narrow streets lined with brick buildings! (You do NOT want to be stuck in that area when fifty or sixty 'Rolling Thunder' motorcyclists rev their engines in unison!)

Maybe it's just another symptom of my encroaching old age......

well i HAD a 04 SRT-4 and i cut out the resonater, has no muffler from the factory and it was pretty darn loud, but i also gained some power in doing so.My track times dropped a few but nothing crazy.but it was a help...

i was runnin 13.8 stock.....cut the resonater out, added a cold air,and an adjustable wastegate and was runnin a 13.05...lol....i miss thast thing...but it was costin a fortune to insure($3,400yr in mass)

but ya like honda civis and all the "ricers" i have no idea why they do it with there fart cans, there losing power by takin away resrtictin in the N/A cars..i guess since there slow they gotta be loud i guess

They will all suffer low frequency hearing loss that will effect them later in their life.
