Default need help deciding what to do..

So I was hit on the interstate in my 1998 grand prix... wasn't my fault, called insurance and all that. The guy who hit me's insurance came, took pictures, said it would cost about 1,300 dollars to fix. Well, we don't really care to fix it. We want to get rid of it since we got our PT, and we don't want to have to pay for insurance on two cars. So our issue is this, what should we do now? Should we cash the 1300 dollar check? Our garage said that they would have to take the bumper off to look for more damage, which most likely there would be... but we would then have to pay the garage for taking it apart. I mean, we could take that chance, maybe it's totalled? I would hate to lose out on money if it is totalled.

So I guess this is the options we have:

1. Take the 1300 dollars, then sell the car to a salvage
2. Go ahead and let our garage take it apart and possibly get LESS money?? (because we would have to pay them out of the money we have (the 1300), right?)

Any other ideas?? Thanks fellas.

Talk to the garage mechanic. Does he charge hourly, or will he give you a set price for looking for more damage? It shouldn't take that long to take off just the bumper. Is he pretty sure there's more damage that would offset the inspection fee or just guessing?

He said the issue is that once he takes off the bumper it wouldn't be drivable.. I guess is the issue..

"Their insurance company looked at it...."????
That sound backwards, doesn't it??
-When I get in an accident, I always go to my insurances' authorized repair shop, or agent first! The shop gets paid through the insurance company to fix it...if they find more, the insurance company pays more.
**Then your insurance company settles with their insurance company.
So, I'm not sure why the "other possible damage" would cost you. The answer may be, "don't accept their estimate". Get your own, through your own insurance company. You shouldn't have to pay a dime, including a rental car while it is in the shop!

The issue is we don't really care to have it fixed, we'd rather have the money to replenish our savings because we depleated it after buying the pt.

What's the issue? It's your money. If you want to keep it, it's yours.

And Sooner, when I get in an accident that is someone else's fault, I don't even tell MY insurance company. I just go through the other guys' insurance company if they're playing ball. Why would I want an accident from someone else to end up on my insurance record and possibly raise my rates? I only once involved my insurance company and that was because the other insurance company wasn't giving me a fair settlement. But raised rates for three years? Hell no. In the end, in this instance, it wouldn't even be worth the $1300. In the couple accidents that I've been in where it was MY fault or my wife's and the damage was under $1,000 I had the other people not report it to thier insurance, and I didn't report it to mine. I paid out of my own pocket. I don't understand why people go through insurance companies for little tiny claims. It's just silly.

Ugh!

Hubby's job decided to take their work vans away for to and from travel (they have to drive personal vehicles to and from work, then work vehicles to and from their jobs) SOOOO seems like Hubby will be using the grand prix. We talked to a pontiac dealership and they said that with Hardford or however you spell it what they gave us is as good as we are going to get unless we choose to get it fixed, which we really don't want to do.. so I guess hubby will be driving around with a busted bumper and we will be cashing the check to replenish our savings.
