Hey Everyone,
Wow! All I can say is, having been a long haul truck driver for the past 8 years, logged a little over 1,000,000 miles, across 49 out of 50 United States, and most of Canada that the fastest I have ever gone in anything was 130 with an Owner Operator in a wound over Peterbuilt with a 600 HP Cat, and an 18 speed with an overdrive on a long quiet stretch of I90 up in Montana back when the legal posted speed limit was, and i'm not kidding "Whatever you feel as reasonable! Of course you gotta take into account that the Population for the whole state of Montana is only in the mid 5 figures, so you may go 100 miles before you see a house ( Not much in the way of traffic)! That was on 18 wheels! I can only imagine what 160 on 2 wheels must of felt like! Sure, 130 is fast in a truck, but you have to take into account, most OTR (Over The Road) Truck Drivers have had Formal Training, and Certification including having to spend a period of time on an ice skid pad regaining control of an out of control truck, just to drive a Commercial Truck, In their normal duties drive 10 hours per day, 7 days per week, and as most seasoned drivers do, keep the truck rolling no matter what condition of road, or weather! I have actually driven through Snow Storms, White Outs, Freezing Rain, Freezing Fog, Ice Storms, 2 Hurricanes, and along side 5 Tornado's, including being re-routed from Greensburg KS, about 45 minutes after an F5 Tornado leveled the entire town! This isn't to say that we don't have our share of people who simply can't drive a truck, but, nor that we weren't pushing it a bit to see what the truck would do, but for the majority of seasoned OTR Drivers, we are trained professional Drivers, and driving a truck is all we do, all day, every day. Then you take a guy like this. Does he have track time, and is more than capable handling that kind of speed, and looking to blow off some steam, or is he like a lot of people ( No matter how well off) that has gone through the Cones at the DMV, and answered 20 questions, and is just looking for a good time, has little to no clue, and if not stopped would have probably wound up laying it down somewhere up the road killing himself, and/or someone else in the process?Their are several States back east around Baltimore, DC, Penn, on up to Maine where if you are found going 15 MPH over the posted speed limit in a Commercial Truck for any reason, they skip the whole ticket process, and can automatically impound the Truck, put you in jail for 90 days, and in some circumstances, ban you from driving within that State for up to 5 years plus heavy fines! This guy gets popped at 160, and sure, he gets a healthy fine, but rides his bike home, and can go right back out and do it all over again tomorrow! I swear, If most people could go out on a truck for even one 28 day trip, and see how people actually drive, they would have a whole new respect not only for truck drivers, but for how they drive in their day to day routine! Their would be a lot less people cruising down the freeway at 80 MPH, cut 10 feet in front of an 80,000 pound truck going 65, slam on their brakes, and think a truck can stop!, or come up, on a truck at a light with his right turn signal on, and none the less try to squeeze in on the right side of the truck, right up into our blind spot where we can't see you, and risk being squashed by our trailer tires as we try to negotiate the turn! Or, like this guy, going on lick a bat out of He$?, not realizing that a truck in front of him is going 65, and smacks right into the back of the trailer! Or any of the hundreds of scenarios I have seen played out over, and over! I even one time had a woman driving along side me in the right lane while I was in the #2 lane on a 4 lane freeway! She had swerved to miss a pot hole in the road, lost control, spun sideways, and hit the drive wheels of my truck head on! One second earlier, and she would have hit my fuel tanks! One second later, and she would have been decapitated by going under my trailer, and then been squashed by my trailer tires as I rolled over her with 40,000 of freight! As I was fully loaded, I didn't even feel her hit my truck, and only knew cause I caught a bunch of debris flying around in my mirror, and even then, since I was fully loaded, even after locking up my brakes, it still took me a little over 300 feet to stop!In this case, she was alright, and though her car was totaled, she lived to tell the tale! By Federal Law, and written into the DOT Safety Manual that all Truck Drivers must have in possession at all times while on the road, As part of our training, if any commercial carrier is involved in, witness, or come on scene of a motor vehicle accident, it is the commercial truck drivers responsibility to secure the accident scene, help as necessary to save injured parties involved, contact emergency personnel either via phone, or CB, and wait till the scene has been secured! Also, if a commercial truck is involved, and their is more than $500.00 in damage to either vehicle, by law, the truck driver must request, both a drug, and alcohol test within two hours of the accident! This is on top of the 7- 10 random drug, and alcohol tests that drivers normally take each year! When you add that to the months of schooling, all weather skid pad training, the 400 questions on the written test alone just to get your CDL, and endorsements to drive hazardess materials, tankers, flat bed, and doubles, and triples, the full FBI background chech, and re-certification for a Haz-Mat card that allows you to carry any amount of Hazerdous Material via Interstate, and then the full DOT (Department of Transportation) strict laws for hours of service, and equipment regulations, as well as requiring at least one full certified DOT Physical every two years, and in many circumstances annually, not to mention being required to alson know, understand, and obey local laws no matter where you are at in the country! I don't mean to be, and apologize for going on, and on, but when you see guys like this day after day, month after month, year after year, screwing around for no apparent reason other than to have fun, I'm sorry, but to ist a waste, and another accident waiting to happen! No matter what, whenever he loses it, and becomes a little red speck on the asphalt, their aint no amount of money that is gonna bring him back! I have a solid 1, 197,690 miles logged on the books to show for my 8 years driving career! Of that, I never once had a ticket, moving, or moving violation of any kind! The only accident while I was behind the wheel was the incident mentioned above, and that was 100% the other drivers fault! So with all of the training, and experience, when we push the envelope a little, we usually only do it on a secluded stretch of road, and in a professional, and safe manner, and if we are caught, we always mus t pay a big price, no exceptions! So, in the likelihood that this guy has no real experience, and no respect for that type of speed, I think they let him off way easy, and think it should have been more! ![]() Whew! I feel better now! Sorry guys, this kinda thing just gets to me sometimes! Point is, slow down, and drive safe! We have way too many accident's and deaths on the highway that were caused by careless drivers, and idiots just like this! Take er easy! Candyman

It was very interesting reading your post Candyman...I've actually thought about becoming a trucker at one point in time.
I have full respect for semi-truck drivers..Their heavy and if someone is dumb enough to think that a semi can stop on a dime...well their dumb. Little off topic - What is your view on people 'drafting' on the interstate? I regularly find a semi and maintain 60-65 with the semi about 3 seconds behind and am noticing some good MPG gain...But as a trucker, what do you guys think when someone gets on your tail and stays with you for an extended amount of time? Thanks!
