They dropped the name and when they brought it back, sales on the 500/Taurus went up.
The pictures I had of it were destroyed in a office fire several years ago along with some priceless LeMans and other race pictures from the XX ## project we sub contracted..There were some pictures and a article in ,I think, Road & Track ,Car & Driver or Sports Car Graphic...There were several more done after we did the first one..The other one in the running for FUN was the 455 Olds Toronado Driveline hidden in the back of a VW Bus..

On the Taurus subject --I always wanted to build a mild custom early Taurus Wagon with the SHO driveline, just never got a round-tuitthe years and the miles on my body are catching up ..

Wow! It sounds like you've been part of some cool projects.

I like your SHO wagon idea. I've got a high-mile Crown Vic sitting my yard that keeps calling me to put a hopped up mod motor into it with a stick poking out of the floor in front of the bench seat. The problem circled on the front of the car keep me from pursuing that idea though.

Is it just me, or have automakers forgotten the value of aesthetics in a well built engine?

Pretty much. That goes the design of the exterior of most cars these days as well.

Seems to me like they have and to top that they don't expect anyone to work on them without a lot of Hi Dollar equipment..
Notice the hose on the front of the engine with the "Y" , anyone take a guess as to the replacement price..JUST LOOKED WITH MY GLASSES ON --I'LL BE DAMNED,IT'S A EXHAUST

A case in point--The two rear plugs on the right bank on my Mazda 4 Litre V6 pick up...I don't think even a limber jointed kid could change them let alone a broken down old fart...That's why I appreciate my old MG's...even if they do take Whitworth size wrenches....

I saw a SHO commercial for the first time last night. Just now, I checked out the Ford site to build your own. Prices start at just over $37k and I built one up to over $45k with all the options. No manual transmission option either.

At my school in my autos class we have two Ford vehicles. both are some of the crappiest cars I've ever had to work on.
Theres a '04 Ford Focus and a '93 Taurus... I think its a '93. Well I wasn't assigned the Taurus or the Focus I just helped my friends on them. I was working on Petey(PT). I helped them both on the emission tests for each car and the results were horrifying. Most likely it was all the problems with the car that they hadn't fixed yet but the focus was running at like 22000 hydrocarbons per million. when its supposed to be at like 600 i think.
The Taurus was at like 16000 when it was supposed to be around 1200 or something. I'm not sure what the problem was probably a combination of bad spark plugs bad fuel and stuff... I'm pretty sure both of those cars are the reason for the "Hole in the Ozone Layer"
I know i'm wrong about something so somebody please correct me and make me feel stupid.
lol

Every Ford I've owned needed a new cat converter around 100k, not sure if mine were lemons or what, but my fords ate those cats for breakfast.

The SHO has put on serious weight since the original SHO, and "eco-boost" is a real stretch since it slurps gas.
Read a road test in recent car mag.
Read the road test a few days after the original post and you're right. A lot of mags are complaining about the weight, the speed limiter, and the turbo boost. The top speed on the car is 130 and the boost is set up at 11llbs per turbo (most test shos are significantly higher, 13-20 lbs.)

If aftermarket can increase the speed limiter and up the turbo boost, that car will be faster than any new performance car on the street.
