Spammer

I don't know how many of you had noticed, but this morning this site was visited by a spammer that I couldn't get rid of. The user name was "s30700540952" and no matter how many times I banned the user, it wouldn't take. By "take" I mean when I ban a user a line is drawn thru the name and that user cannot post anymore. I tried several times and s30700540952 wouldn't go away. It/he/she posted about 50 messages all over the forum doing about 6 at a time. I deleted the posted messages (which this forum let me do) but I couldn't stop the poster. s30700540952 finally gave up but I think they may be back. I can't get hold of the owner of the forum to find out what else I could do.

I'm about to go up north (Virginia/ Grandkids) Sunday for about 3 weeks and I'll only get to the forums once in awhile so be patient if you see any SPAM. It wont' go away as fast as it has been because I won't be around as much.

It's pretty crazy how much of that stuff shows up in the later evening hours after you're gone. Maybe more goes on behind the scenes at other forums to prevent that but I've never seen it as bad as it gets here anywhere else.

Your right. I hit the forum about 6-6:30 am before I do my volunteering job with the sheriff. Almost everyday I ban about 6 spammers and all that they posted overnight which leads me to believe the SPAM is coming from overseas where the time zone is completely opposite of ours. The daylight hours it seems to be pretty clear all except this morning around 10am when the new one hit and I couldn't ban.

They can spam all they like, I do it here like I do elsewhere and on my home and work computer, I don't open it, I don't read it, I just delete what I can and ignore the rest.

9 out of 10 are pretty easy to spot and ignore but they do tend to clog up the forum sections with unwanted postings.

I think that the reason the spammers hit so much as we have a lot of activity!!!

Well, we all like that so we'll just have to put up with the annoying posts. I try banning some of them before they even get a chance to post as I can recognize some of the fake names they use but like just now, someone just logged on (hasn't posted yet) and called himself "WonderMonkey". Now I ask, is that somebody just picking a crazy name to actually join the forum or somebody that will show up later on trying to sell Nike shoes or peddeling iPods ?

Is there anyway that you could promote someone to monitor the forums while your away? That way we can have some control of the spam?

No, sorry. Don't have that authority. Only Skylight (who doesn't visit very often) can do that. We do have two others (thegoldpt, ucantcme) but unfortunately they are both pretty busy and get here whenever they can. I'll be able to monitor (hopefully) once a day or miss day a day here and there just to look over the forum for spammers.

If I do happen to get some time for myself I'll chime in on a answer or two.

The spare computer at my son's house is shared by my daughter-in-law and the two grandkids (8 & 6 yrs) and they both love the computer so I have to squeeze in when I can.

CREWZIN vbulletin.org has lots of mods that our Admins can install to help clean and slow the stuff down. I'll pm you some.
