Hooligan, GAH!! No test or any sort of regulation? Holy crap! I am sure somewhere, someone thought it was a good, money-saving idea.

We can get our vehicles tags in MI by mail, but when we need to renew our driver's license, its at a Secretary of State's office branch (DMV in most other states), sit down, take the 10 question test and hand it in. If you fail the test, they give you a booklet to read over, study and pretty much just memorize the answers you missed, THEN you re-take it and you are merrily on your way. Nothing else. Tra-la-lah. I suspect that the day is coming that the only time you will have to set foot into the SofS office will be to transfer a used vehicle title, everything else will be via the Net or mail.

When I was getting insurance for the PT, the insurance lady was telling me that the estimate for uninsured motorists in MI currently is about 30%. I said, that is the 30% who are driving on a legal license where the insurance company has reported the lapse in insurance to the State. I am betting its at least 10% higher than that because of the number of people driving on suspended or revoked licenses who don't bother with insurance either.

Texting and driving is so dumb and dangerous. I think it is 100 times worse than talking on the phone while driving.

At my job we are actually representing a woman's children because thier mom was hit by a car and died while checking the mail. The teen driver who hit her admitted that he was texting when the accident happened. Of couse now he is taking that statement back.

What a waste of a life.

Maybe it's just my encroaching old age, but I've never understood the need to constantly be on the cell phone or texting (ZOMG!!!! ROFL!!!! and all those other inanities). What is so all-fired important that it Just. Can't. Wait. until they're not steering a ton and a half of steel down a public road?

It's only been about fifteen years since the explosion of cellphone availability; somehow or other, we used to manage to get in touch with each other as needed. I really don't understand the need to be in constant contact via cellphones, email, twitter, texting etc. etc ad nauseum; do they think they'll cease to exist or something?!?

Prettybluewoody, your "maturity" is showing. Remember writing letters, I don't mean just capitals either.

You mean practicing your penmanship, and (WAY back in the dark ages!) the Palmer Method?!? I miss letters..... real, hold-in-your-hand hand-written paper letters in my mailbox..... Sigh. Seems the only things in there anymore are bills and catalogs: I couldn't begin to tell you the last time I got an honest-to-God Letter!

Talking Re: Texting and Driving

I'd like to see the manufacters of these devices put a motion sensor in them so they couldn't be used while in motion. and if anybody thinks that something like that would ever happen, I've got some Ocean Front property In Az that I'd like to sell ya.

In Quebec, it is the law and it is a very hefty fine if you are caught using a cell phone while driving.
