Default November 11 - For all the troops

If You Won't Stand Behind Our Troops, Feel Free To Stand In Front of Them!

I hope we can all take a moment and remember all our troops who have served or are serving, not just in the two world wars but all the conflicts since then including our present involvements.

Whether you agree or not with what they are doing, they still should be remembered.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
On November 11, 1999 Terry Kelly was in a drug store in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. At 10:55 AM an announcement came over the stores PA asking customers who would still be on the premises at 11:00 AM to give two minutes of silence in respect to the veterans who have sacrificed so much for us.

Terry was impressed with the stores leadership role in adopting the Legions two minutes of silence initiative. He felt that the stores contribution of educating the public to the importance of remembering was commendable.

When eleven oclock arrived on that day, an announcement was again made asking for the two minutes of silence to commence. All customers, with the exception of a man who was accompanied by his young child, showed their respect.

Terrys anger towards the father for trying to engage the stores clerk in conversation and for setting a bad example for his child was channeled into a beautiful piece of work called, A Pittance of Time. Terry later recorded A Pittance of Time and included it on his full-length music CD, The Power of the Dream.

Annoys me that I don't get Veteran's Day off.

I spent 16 months in Vietnam in the Marines..(4/68 - 8/69)

It's sad that Nov 11 is becoming less and less of a Remembrance Day. At least here in Manitoba its still half a day off for all businesses. Stores, bars and so forth can't open until 1:00 pm.

I certainly support our troops in word and deed. And a day of rememberance set aside for those currently at their post and a day of memorial for those that paid the ultimate price (sometimes to appease world politics vs actually defending our country) is highly appropriate.

However, as far as 'feel free to stand in front of them', let's remember why they are fighting and/or gave their life... for freedom. And that includes the freedom to oppose policies and leaders.

November 11, Applebee's and Subway (there may be others) are offering free or reduced prices on their meals. You must show a ID card, DD-214, or a VA card to take advantage of this offer.

Good for them! And about damn time, too....

As for me, I'll be at Arlington, to spend 11am with my father, and praying for the troops overseas, including my nephews (one with the 82nd Airborne in Afghanistan, the other a Marine sgt. in Iraq. Their Navy grandfather would be VERY proud of both.)

I agree, that's a good offer. I don't think Winnipeg is doing anything

I've heard some cities offer free bus rides to Vets going to services in the morning.

I myself was in the Army Reserves for 4 years during peace time in the mid 80's. I just got a new flag for my neighboors front porch to put up tonight. He has a small one so I'm putting up a regular one for him. He is a WW2 vet from a Airborne unit and was in Battle Of The Bulge, and Normandy, and also a POW in a German Camp. I thought it was the least I could do..Prettybluewoody didn't you come from a military family??

Military family.... boy, that's putting it mildly!

Eight uncles (four blood, four by marriage) served in WWII; one died in a bomber shot down over the English Channel. Six were Army, one Marine, and one Army Air Corp. Two younger uncles by blood (what can I say: we're a large family!) served in Korea, one Army/one Marine. Youngest uncle served in the Navy during the 50s and 60s. Plus two WWII WACs and a WAVE: can't forget my aunts!

My father himself served in the Navy, 1946-1978; joined up on his seventeenth birthday, was a Master Chief Torpedoman and submarine COB. And, of course, there're those nephews of mine currently in the Army and Marines.

We seem to have missed the Revolution, but if you go back, you'll find us on both sides of the War of 1812, both sides of the Civil War, AND both sides of the Spanish-American War. Oh yeah: and my great-grandfather fought for the Kaiser in WWI.....
