In a motorcycle accident the bike is likely to be totalled with little damage to a car - unless you get a BIG motorcycle - which I would NOT recommend - don't get a crotch rocket or something that weighs multiples of what you weigh until you are experienced.
You want a motorcycle in Michigan in the winter? ![]() You'll get frostbite on your gonads!

I have been a PRE- EMT in my past life in Michigan. We (I) have had to pick up broken bodies of motorcycle drivers. I know MSP officers who have had to inform parents of the serious injury or death of their child. You see, parents are supposed to die BEFORE their children. Please think this over, as what ever your insurance doesn't cover, your parents, out of love, will wind up paying. IMHO this is NOT a smart move.

I understand the dangers of the vehicle. I have my fourheeler for my toy, i wont be treating my bike as a toy. I understand its not always about me either, other drivers can hurt me just as bad as i can. I just really like the freedom i get riding my quad and i've riden a few of my friends bikes. That and the mileage a bike gets makes it a very ideal vehicle in my opinion. I'm mostly just asking about the insurance part. Honestly there will always be someone telling you not to do something you want and downsides to it. Its my personal choice that i want a motorcycle.
edit: By the way, i'm not being a smarta** im just giving my 2 cents.

It's already been said about the downside so I won't go into that but I would say that 20/40/10 doesn't cover very much and in this day and age where everyone sues at the drop of a hat, you might find your self in a heap of trouble if you happen to be at fault and the other party sues. The progressive quote sounds too cheap for your age and driving record so you better read the fine print.

You're 19, I'm 54 soon to be 55. I have had a motorcycle for most of my adult life and currently have a FLT Harley bagger. For what it's worth here's my 2 cents. The insurance you're talking about isn't going to cover squat in the event of an accident if it's your fault. You will end up never being able to own anything for the rest of your life and chances are if you are still living at home your parents will end up losing a lot that they have worked for in their life times. Doesn't sound fair does it. Another thing to think about is, if you haven't taken a motorcycle safety course, you should before even considering riding on the road. In my opinion that should be mandatory nationwide before even being allowed to purchase a road bike. Riding 2 wheels on the road is very different from riding a 4 wheeler off road. You're gonna do what you're gonna do I can see by your responses as a long time ago I was just like you. I'm just asking you to think of others ahead of yourself as you will benefit from it in the long run.
Like I said, this is just my 2 cents and I don't mean to offend you. If I did I apologize. Take care and think about it long and hard.............Gary |

I don't take offence, i actually thank you for your insight. But what do you mean it could effect my parents? I do live at home with them but if the insurance is under my name wouldnt that mean they would be free from any of my mistakes?

In a perfect world that should be true but, as Crewzin said with everyone sueing at the drop of a hat, who knows? Not only that, but you don't think your parents would lose something if you were killed or hurt bad enough that you required care the rest of your life? If you didn't have enough insurance to take care of medical treatment over the course of the remainder of your life don't you think Mom and Dad wouldn't sacrifice to help you? My son passed away 3 years and 3 months ago and I would give up everything I own to have him back. I kind of think your parents would do the same. You have a lot to think about and I hope you do. If you want a motorcycle, buy a dirt bike and ride off road for a few years. Dirt is softer when you fall not to mention the experience you will gain, and you don't have idiots with cell phones stuck to their ears pulling out in front of you.
Take care and good luck what ever you decide to do......Gary |
