anyone own a bernese mountain dog??

Bob, I have an Irish Wolfhound. BigDogDad has two large dogs but I don't recall if they are Bernese Mountain Dogs.

I have a Great Pyrenees and a St. Bernard. Both of mine and including the Bernese Mountain dog belong to the Mastiff family. My St. Bernard is about 60 lbs larger then the Great Pyrenees and you will notice the difference. VERY STRONG. They need to be trained at a very early stage in their life. If not, they will control everything. Anchor (the Great Pry.) is now 85 lbs and I can control him on the leash by only holding it with two fingers. Trudy (the St. Bernard) is about 145 lbs and I need to hold on to the lead with both hands and at times make sure my feet are anchored into the ground. And on some occassions I hope a tree is nearby to wrap around. Tied Trudy up one day to the garage door runners and some one ran by and she ripped the runners right out of the foundation! STRONG, STRONG, STRONG. But both are "gentle giants". Very loving.

Anchor can take the heat of Florida while Trudy can't. The AKC book will give you an index of 1 through 5 on each breed on how they can tolorate the heat/cold. Go to the library and read up. Don't make the mistake of getting a dog and then dumping it in the pound because alittle home work wasn't done.
