Old telephones with relays and mechanical ringers were able to trigger explosions. As a teen, I installed explosion-proof phones in a perfume factory for that reason. Cell phone are all solid-state and produce no arcing.

This is total BS. The reason people associate gas station fires with cell phones is that the person that is usually involved is getting in and out of the car while talking on the phone. The reason the fires start is that after you start pumping gas and set the nozzle to pump automatically, and then get in and out of the car, static electricity builds up and when you grab the handle when you're done, PREST-O! This is also why most victims of this are women, because they are more likely to get in and out of the car while gassing up!

I'll have to take a picture of the warnings at my gas station next time I fill up. The warnings also mention don't put a gas container on the car while filling up. There was a story not to long ago about a women, on the cell phone, her hair caught on fire. They ended up blameing static and her hair spray. Anyway, there are warnings about this discussion at the pumps and also a point to touch to discharge any static you may have.

I think I would take the warnings. I don't feel like being "flamed"

The warnings on gas pumps are based on urban myth.
