One benefit of the high gas prices is that the popularity of road mastodons will go down. At times I think I must be un-American - I have never had a desire to own a pickup or SUV - I am, however, on my 3rd mini-van and find they have addresses all my people and cargo hauling needs at 20+ MPG.

I think the only ways these things will become "outlawed" is:

1. Continued high gas prices (everybody has an economic breaking point).

2. TV news magazines reporting that "trucks" are not required to have the same safety ratings as automobiles. I guess it's because the government regulators views car drivers and truck drivers as having different values to society. Add in extreme vehicle depreciation. Now spin this into some kind of a OPEC conspiracy, and the light bulbs start to go on.

3. Somebody who is too little in stature for the vehicle they are driving has to be sued. Now that would be a good episode for Law & Order: Little lady attorney driving Escalade backs over entire family in Nordstrom's parking lot. And this time the jury sends a message of common sense.

Speaking of spatial qualities, just saw a female 10 minutes ago driving a Highlander pull up to the curb gradually getting closer, closer until scraaaaaape. [?] [?]

Well, if your picking on the SUV's because they suck up the gas your sucking up the wrong tree. I have a GT which gets all but 17mph and the N/A's are getting around 25mph. Sorry to say everyone, some of this SUV's from Toyota, Lexus, Mistu, etc. are getting 25+. So whats your point? They're bigger that yours therefore they're no good? There has always been small cars and there has always been larger cars. The choice is yours to what you want to own and once you make your decision you can't expect everyone else to abid by it.

I have to agree BDD, I have a GT and an '02 Explorer V8,4X4, both geting around 17.5 MPG. Now I could probably do better if I tried, maybe save $3.75 a week on gas. I Quit smoking years ago just so I could pay more for gas! The GT milage surprized me at first, but it's fun to drive and worth the extra gas. As for the SUV, in LA! I drive 150 miles every other week-end from 25' elivation to 6750' in the rain, fog and yes SNOW with all our wood carving gear. It's comfortable and fits the bill. Otherwise its in the drive collecting dust!

i also agree it should be ones decision to drive one, My parents own a 1999 Suburban, we had 3 cars until we got it we traded the truck and mini van to get it so we combined the 2 vehicles becuase my dad hs 2 trailers he huals so it fits that use and huals people so i personally i feel people should have the right to choose the vehicle they drive.

Its no one but the drivers of the SUVs business.

I have no need or want to buy an SUV but damnit, its not our business what other people choose to drive or pay for gas.
