Default Question about Eagle Talon

Anyone have any experance with an Eagle talon AWD turbo? I have a chance to buy one for about $400.00. It is supose to run but has a small amount of white smoke coming out of it. I have to check the car out before I buy but what I am looking for is any inherant problems I should be aware of? The car is a 92 eagle talon TSI turbo. Any help would be appreated. [:I]

No experience with Eagle Talons, but white smoke is usually oil consumption. I'd test drive - if nothing obvious, go for it - for $400 it isn't gonna be pristine...

Quicksilver,
Blue is oil, white is usually steam, coolant, as far as the Talon,, accordind to Bon Stockum,,,, they are great sleeper cars with alot of possibilities,, go to Bobs site and check it out he started one, Untill work stopped him, could you see the face of a WRX STI driver when a 11 year old car smokes him off the line

My son had an AWD Eagle Talon Turbo. Fast sucker. Only problem he ran into was the timing belt that blew at about 70,000. He was supposed to change it at 60 and when it blew it costs his about $2500 to get it back up and running. Other than that, it was a great little car..absolutly no room in the back...The salesman that went for a test drive with us had to lay down in the back seat. Personally, I'd steer away from anything blowing any kind of smoke unless I had it throughly checked out to find out why.

If the body and transmission are in good shape, buy it. That's a great deal. Eagle Talon's are awesome cars, I sold mine to get the PT cruiser, as it had no room for my newborn (at the time, she's 1 year old yesterday!). Doing most repair work on them is fairly easy, with the timing belt being one of the few exceptions. Change them every 60,000 miles, as the Talon engine is an "interference" engine, which means if you skip timing, the piston heads crash into the valves, causing major damage of the sort that CREWZIN described.

A totally awesome site for learning about Eagle Talons is www.DSMTUNERS.com

The cars have a devoted following, and you can learn how to easily put bigger turbos, bigger exhausts, etc on there and have an awesome fast car for very very cheap.

White smoke typically means coolant, which is most likely to be the head gasket. Instructions for how to change the head gasket are available either at dsmtuners or at www.vfaq.com

It also might be a warped head, but salvage parts for these cars are available everywhere as they were VERY popular and sold very well during their run.

Talons are often referred to as DSMs because of the joint venture that produced them, between Mitsubishi and Chrysler, was called Diamond-Star Motors. They produced the Eagle Talon, Plymouth Laser, and Mitsubishi Eclipse.

Enjoy!

Those cars can be scary fast.

Think it costs too much to be worth it.

Get a mechanic to check it out when or if you test drive it.

Yes they are crazy fast. Kid I know has the equivalent to this in the form of a GTS Eclipse.
All I know is when I hit 70 he was going 110+. [B)]

Pretty good cars, and $400 is a good price. Only problem is, I've known a few people with Eclipse/Talons, and they don't seem to be the most reliable car out there.

I knew a girl at my old work who had a 92ish Eclipse. That car just kept falling apart, it was horrible. Knew another girl with a 97-98 Eclipse, and she had major problems with that too. My Friend has had his 95 Eagle for several months now (He doesn't drive much though) They had to replace the Radiator because it kept over-heating, but besides that the car has been trouble-free.

$400 in a great price for a fun car like that. However, considering the nature of the car, and the fact thats it's already blowing white smoke, don't expect it to get alot of

The gst is just turbo the gsx is awd. and turbo.

My friend has a 95 eclipse gs that is one hell of a sleeper. He got it for 3 grand w/ bad head gasket we re did it and added cams, cam gears, pulleys, and he had the head machined and got new valves. He got a venom intake manifold , venom fuel rail, and venom fuel injectors from a dsm site for 500 and had a retail of more than 2000. They are cheap and helped up performance. He spent like 6000 total on cost of car ,body kit, paint, exhaust, intake, Intake manifold, fuel rail, injector , etc. Had it dynoed and it is 285 and he has plans for a turbo. Just timing chain problems with the engines in general. Check out howellautomotive.com for parts and even crate engines. they are a good budget auto cross or drag car. Some people even use the 1st gen awd's for ralley.

Ok now im done.

Dan
