My parents had friends who had a dairy farm upstate NY. Mailbox was a good mile from the house on more of a "main" road (still dirt). Anyway, hunters took potshots at his mailbox, and mail would get wet from holes. He torched out pieces of an old plow, then welded an arch of 2 curved plates over the mailbox, and mounted it on a 4x4 post. He painted it all white. He wished he could see when the bullets would come back at them as they hit about an inch of tempered steel....

Back in Maryland, drunken A$$holes used to ride around in a pickup truck with one or two in the back with a baseball bat and take a swing at the mailboxes along the side of the road. It was actually a game called "Mailbox Baseball" [:0]
