Default Driving in Texas

Question for those of you in Texas. Is it required to have a license plate on the front of our vehicles? I'm in CA where it's a requirement, but I don't know about TX, where I'm moving next month.

Thanks.

I'm not from Texas but I went to another forum where there's a chapter set up for PT owners from there and I looked at some of the owners galleries. I didn't see any front plates on the ones I looked at...but they may be running illegally, so you better get some confirmation from a Texan.

Aren't they the lone star state? If so, i would tend to think a lone plate would do[]

I like that - the "lone plate state"

I've only asked because I can't find the right info on their DMV website... Hmm... not finding information on a DMV website; I suppose I shouldn't be surprised... [8)]

A front plate is required by law in Texas. You can run without one and take your chances. Unless you're acting like an idiot or your car greatly stands out, the cops have more important things to do. With more and more red light cameras going up, it's a good idea to be more careful. [:I]
This was covered in a thread a while back and a good compromise was offered. They showed a parts store plate holder that could be bent to curve it and the plate with the bumper. By doing this and mounting the top of the plate even or slightly lower than the top of the bumper, the front plate becomes less offensive.

2SB is correct. You do need a front plate, but alot of us do not have them on. We have two PTs and neither has a plate on the front. In the 4 years of ownership we have never been pulled for a plate violation. It is a risk you take, as I know a few that have been stopped by an aggressive trooper, or small town cop looking for something to do. There was a petition last year to get enough signatures to get action going on changing the law. Don't know how that went.

Where in Texas are you heading? We have active clubs in most of the major cities.

Arent red light cameras a legal form of entraptment? I mean, it catches THE CAR, NOT THE DRIVER. If the citizen gets the ticket and signs it, then he admits to being guilty. If you just throw it away can they charge you with anything?? Heck, a Goodyear rep couldve been out testing an alignment...it wouldnt be my fault he ran a light...but it would be good reason to kill him

Sakigt,

The way you explained it, your saying the person would be stopped and signs a ticket when caught by a red light camera. No body is stopped. The registered owner of the car is sent a ticket in the mail and it's up to that owner to go to court and prove he/she wasn't driving. A lot of times the camera takes the picture of the whole front of the car including the driver so there's no possible way to say it wasn't you, if your the one in the picture. If you don't have a plate, then yes you got away with it...but that's why some officers go after cars without the plate. Some states/jurisdictions have fought the red light camera and won but most states have made it legal.
