Default Continued discussion regarding PocketPC...

I wanted to start a new thread on this, but don't have the time to really answer at the moment, so here are the questions from the other thread regarding Navigation Systems...

That Bluetooth earpiece sounds like a great way to handle it. My concern with using a PPC seperate from the phone is juggling the two:
1) Look up the number on the PPC
2) hit "dial via bluetooth"
3) stow the stylus
4) put PDA in pocket
5) find phone

By the time all that is done, you could drop one or the other, or the person you're calling could answer the phone before you get to your cell phone.

Keeping the phone in the pocket and using the bluetooth earpiece does away with all that. Very nice.

For those who don't know, "Bluetooth" is short range wireless technology that lets phones, PDAs, GPSs, computers, and other devices "talk" to each other.

How do you enter addresses in the factory version?
Does a keyboard pop-up on the screen?
Isn't it kind of tough entering data (choosing a destination) down there?
Does it remember destinations so you cn pull them up again later?

Yeah, wireless PDA's are nice. You don't need to be a professional to have one. If you're in a new city and wanted to look for a nice restaurant, just take out your PDA and surf the net. Coupled with a GPS system, you can easily find it as well.

Or maybe one of those email freaks who MUST check their emails daily, you can. If you have the money, it's a nice cool & convenience factor, but for a professional who deals with lots of clients, then it's more of a necessity. I like having my PDA seperate from my phone. Just makes it easier to carry a smaller phone around, when I don't need the convenience of the PDA, although I do keep the PDA handy in my car. I have the HP Ipaq H5555. The nice thing about mine is it has both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. I can make receive calls with my phone in my pocket, while using the bluetooth earpiece. Also, my cellphone has bluetooth as well. I can look up a number on my PDA and then dial my cellphone (still in pocket) while using the bluetooth earpiece.

Technology....don't you love it?
I will get back and answer them.

I never really had a problem. Most of my common numbers are stored on my cellphone, so I don't use my PocketPC that often. If I do have to pull up a number on the PPC and dial it via bluetooth to my phone, I just either pull over or, if I'm walking, just stop and pull out the stylus. I'm never in an emergency where I have to hurry up, look up a number, dial it, put the stylus away, then find the phone, etc. Alot of times, I already have my bluetooth headset on hand, so I normally just put it on, then dial via my PocketPC.

Regarding making entries, it is very difficult to enter in info via the PPC keyboard that pops up on the display. If I have to, then I will. Most of the time, I enter the data via Soti-Pocket Professional and my PC. Pocket Professional is a remote control software. I just get on my pc, start up Pocket Professional, and I can see my PocketPC screen on my PC. I can type in all the information on the PC as if I was actually entering it on the PocketPC itself. I also enter data via Outlook and let the data replicate over on my next activesync session.

Eddie,

My original question regarding entering information was directed to SRG, who uses the factory navigation system built in to the dashboard. It seems to me you'd need to be double jointed to enter data down there.

I don't care for the pop-up keyboard on the PPC. I much prefer the "Letter Recognizer" option. I can write without looking at the screen, even while walking. I can also watch the "word suggestions" that pop up while you type so I can select them. With the keyboard, I rarely used the pop up word suggestions.
