Default Calling all Canadians

When I went to the auto show I saw a car that was so different that it caught my interest. It is only availvable in Canada and overseas. It's call the Smart car. Its made by a division of Mercedes Benz, and it gets over 5o miles to the gallon. I wondered if you could go up to Canada to buy one and bring it back to the U.S? Not sure if that is legal or not, but for the price ($12,000 U.S) it would be fun to tool around town in one. If anyone knows please post. Thanks Gary

DaimlerChrysler wanted to sell this car in the United States but recently they changed their plans.

Actually, the Smart roadster is a neat looking little car. The Smart for Two is somewhat short on styling IMHO.

To answer your question directly, I quote MSNBC http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5217861/
"So what about heading north and bringing a diesel-powered smart back over the border? JoAnne Caza, a Mercedes-Benz spokesperson in Canada, says don't even think about it. "It is not possible since the Canadian car is not certified for sale in the USA," she says."

Test drove a Smart no too long ago. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, which is kind of a backhanded compliment. It would make a good city car, just to get to work and back. I would not want to take one on a road trip. You'll see the odd one in Toronto.

It's a bit pricy for what you get. It's four thousand more than a Toyota Echo; that'll buy a lot of fuel.

It's got paddle shifters on the steering wheel, just like Schumacher's Ferrari.

According to that article, the smarts are coming to the U.S. soon? Gary
