Seems the same as a presidential veto. [:I] [quote]Originally posted by Retro If the legislature presented him with a bill proposing to legalize capitol punishment, he might be able to veto it. However, capitol punishment was already the law of the land. I'm not sure about Texas, but Retro seems to know more about that state. Whether he is allowed to issue a pardon or not isn't the point IMHO. Any governor who issues a pardon is nullifying the law of the land and the work of the courts. Bush has demonstrated his cooperative spirit with the other branches by not issuing lots of pardons or vetos. The stem-cell bill is the first bill he is vetoing since becomming president. It was a core of his campaign platform, and and he was elected partly due to that conviction. It would have been a gross violation of trust that the electorate has placed on him to violate that promise. Remember how His father was lamblasted for violating his "read my lips ... no new taxes" promise? Regarding stem cell research, I agree with you Don. This is a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. A real tough call. It's easy for us on both sides of the argument to take a position. It's another thing to be the president and have to take a stand on this sort of thing. I think he's doing the right thing in allowing the research to continue, but prevent taxpayer funding from being used to kill the embryos. Keep in mind that once stem cells are harvested, they can be reproduced over and over again for many years to come, and there are several strains (I'm not sure if that's the right term) that ARE available for Federaly funded research.

Come on. Our country has NOT gone to hell. I have owned a small business for 35 years. My biggest problem is finding ANYONE to work. Right now, we have 71 leads who need to be called on who want to buy a swimming pool from us. My husband is trying to call on them himself, design and build the pools himself, because we CANNOT find anyone who is willing to WORK and do it. Thank God we are going this weekend to move one of our own kids over here this weekend to do it, and go to work for us. But there is NO excuse for anybody to be homeless and starving in the streets if they have have the least inclination to work hard. If we have gone to hell, it is because we are giving BILLIONS to a bunch of lazy, spoiled freeloaders who won't work for a living. I taught high school, and will never forget the kid in my class who was NINETEEN years old and still in the ninth grade. He had been socially promoted to ninth grade after failing junior high twice, and was attending school at all only so his family could collect Aid to Families With Dependant Children. Every day, I would start class, give an assignment, and he would say "I ain't gonna do that. I ain't gonna read that. I ain't gonna write that." He would attend part of each year, long enough for the family to collect, then drop out of school and do it again the next year. I was astounded when the counselor explained the "system" to me. He could do this until he was 21 years old, she said. There are good jobs going begging all over the country- ask ANYBODY who runs a small business and you will hear the same thing. It's up to US to make our country good! Freedom isn't free. Don't forget, we are at WAR, make no mistake about it. We have to defend ourselves overseas or there will be more 9-11,s, and worse. And anybody in this country can work hard and make it if they try. But it takes sacrifice and EFFORT. We still struggle every day to make ends meet, but we started cleaning other people's pools, working out of our house. Now we have three locations and our own pool. Still tough, still working six and seven day weeks, but a little more than we started with. Sorry, the gloom amd doom is just being run by the wrong girl, here. I still believe you make your own luck, largely.

Agree with you Retro. A majority of the USA people are free loaders of the system while others think that money and a roof over their heads should be handed to them. There are jobs out there but its obvious that many don't want to work. I too am a small business owner and to get someone to work for me is extremely difficult. Most of the time they are just to stupid while the other times they don't want to do a thing except hold out their hand on friday to get their "Hard earn money". I hand to them and say good-bye. I don't look for help anymore, if you want something done right you have to do it yourself. So I work harder, it pays off in the end and the job is done right.
Of course we aren't talking anylonger about the original thread but one can see how easy it is to get side tracked. Its like the old story, tell one person something and then tell someone else and so on to anther dozen or so people. The last person will be telling a different story. |
