Default head gasket replacement and cam/crank relearn

so im going to have to do a head job on the 2001 pt cruiser n/a.
i was reading over the procedure, and it states that after the work is done that you have to do ,cam/crank postion relearn with a "DRB" scan tool, to have the timing right.
so the questions are:
1) is the use of "drb"tool and the "relearn" mandatory?
2) if the head is bad/ cracked or overly warped. i was reading about a head design change after the 2001 model is this just a bolt on affair?
3) if not. can you still find good 2001 designed heads?
