Default What the heck is this thing?

So I removed my rear bumper cover this weekend in preparation of installing a PTeazer smoothie roll pan. Behind the bumper on the driver's side is a large chunk of steel that appears to be some sort of dampener. I never saw this on any wagons I have worked on, so I'm thinking it might be convertible specific.

Can anyone tell me what this is/does???

That's exactly what it is.

In the parts manual for my PT, it is called:

DAMPER, Mass 05067574AA

Chrysler PT Cruiser (2006-2007). #05067574AA: Bumper Impact Absorber Bracket. Damper. Rear; 2006-08

and it's only on the driver's side of the vert.

So what does it dampen? It's next to the muffler, but a wagon has the same muffler location. Doesn't seem related to the bumper, other than by proximity...

From the part description, I would say it is related to a rear-end collision, but I wouldn't want to try it out to see if it actually works

No - me neither. Seems odd that it's only on one side. Maybe it prevents vibration of the driver's head when rear-ended...

Maybe its only on the verts because the verts don't have a roof structure, which would help to absorb and dissipate any energy in the result of a crash.

Don't think it has anything to do with crash safety, Think it's just a good place for a damper to help with the body vibrations that the Verts body would have that the Wagons wouldn't. Lots of published articles touted the PT Verts body minimizing cowl shake and other vibrations Verts usually have.

That makes sense to me, although the rear corner of the car seems an odd place to put it. Either way, the engineers know better than I do...

I think putting a weight on one end is a pretty common method for dealing with vibration. I don't know the theory, maybe the energy goes into trying to move the weight instead of vibrating. On my bike there are weights on the end of the handlebars to dampen vibration. Damn V-twins are like paint shakers!
