I agree, the blind spots are bit much at times, however Chrylser/Mopar offers a dealer isntalled back up sensor kit for PT & PT Convertibles. Not sure of all of the details or cost but I saw it listed on Mopar.com under PT Cruiser.

When we got the car it had the small circle mirrors attached to the side mirrors and it has helped in most blind spots.
Took a little while to get used to, but they are very useful. Just make sure you attach them to the outside edge of the mirror, or else you wont be able to see things directly behind you
