That one was covered up by a dash cover which we lifted up right in front of the salesman....he turned a nice color of red Two of the PT's were in Pensacola and the other in FT Walton Beach, Florida. This must be a "hot sun" deal, because I also noted that each one had badly UV damaged bumpers and splash guards indicating to me they were never covered by a carport or garage. My 2001 has always been covered and shows no problems at all. We have looked at several other years, 02's and 03's and saw no cracking on them.
It has to do with heat, I would think. I mean it doesn't help that the dashes are black (dark colors absorb more heat than light colors) and the material feels like plastic. So, this is why it is soooo important to use windshield reflectors...keeps the heating from coming in. And the sun will tear up anything if you let it sit out there long enough.

Exactly....if you buy a used one, be prepared for all sorts of possible problems. You can't tell by the interior or exterior when you purchase them. A lot of folks don't maintain their vehicles where and when it counts.

Cool Re: Dashboard Complaints

FWIW.....
My 2 cents is..... that I prefer a dash cover to a plain dash anyway! I like putting things on the dask, like my sunglasses, paperwork, or ball cap....I don't like them sliding around. And besides, a dash mat is just another opportunity to mod the PT according to the theme.
(But...to each their own....dash cover + windshield screen = no cracked dash!)

Thumbs up Re: Dashboard Complaints

Yup!
Someone had posted that link in a previous thread on the subject. That type of cover would be my option if I did had cracks that were nonthreatening to dash function; and I wanted the new, smooth dash look.

I am the orginal owner of my PT. I have had my dashcovered since about a month after I bought the car, and I still have a huge crack running from the vent to the windshield and the the vent to the front gauges. So, I don't think it is just about the sun!

Welcome to the forum.

The thread your are answering is 2 months old, however the information yo have tends to put a new light on an old subject. The sun damage was always thought to be the culprit for the cracked dash. Maybe we can here from others that had the problem.
