my 2¢. If my PT is replaced by a "crossover" then I will go back to Ford. That is blasphemy!! If the PT has run it's course, then let the nameplate die with dignity, don't basterdiz it.

Chrysler is certainly looking at a bottom line that does not bode well for the PT. Here are a few considerations:

PT sales have been dropping off in recent years.

With so many manufacturing variations in PT models/equipment there have been efforts to cut manufacturing costs. Just compare the center stack and air conditioning ducts between the 2001-2005 models with the 2006 and newer models. There are fewer parts with simpler assembly procedures. Another cost cutting measure is to decrease build options. The GT with the HO Turbo and Gertrag transmission have been cut from the line for 2008. The convertible will probably be the next cut in the line.

Another problem comes with the government requirement to make Traction Control standard equipment on all cars. I’m not sure of the target date for this change but that government mandated change will have a huge impact upon the PT. The base models have been the best sellers. Judging by current configurations Traction Control requires four wheel disc brakes. These are currently an $825 option. The PT price across the line would need to increase to cover this cost.

Raising prices would surely slow sales further.

Another consideration is manufacturing plant utilization. With corporate belt-tightening and various domestic plant closures Chrysler may be eyeing the efficient Toluca plant for production of newer, more cost efficient and higher profit models.

With today's good news that the PT will be continued (except for the convertible) I revisited this thread finding that my earlier post needs this clarification:

The 2008 PT offers the four-wheel disc brakes with traction control for $625. When the government mandates that traction control must become standard equipment the resulting price increase will also affect other low priced vehicles. The PT should remain price-competitive.

If Chrysler would advertise the PT perhaps sales would increase, thus assuring a more secure future for our favorite little car for years to come.
