PT Cruiser Fans Get Together
The 'PT' in the Chrysler PT Cruiser is supposed to be an abbreviation of 'Personal Transportation.' Few expected it to attain a cult following that sees annual owner get-togethers in Modesto, California that attract over 1,000 cars.
Since its introduction in 2000 the humble PT Cruiser has built up a loyal following from those who have been attracted to its retro styling and flexible cargo capacity.
Even though thousands of Canadians use the PT Cruiser as everyday transport, its greatest strength is the number of personalized and customized versions on the road.
Victorians will be able to experience the camaraderie of PT Cruiser owners as they host a car show tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Organizers are expecting between 20 to 40 from all over the Island as well as the Lower Mainland and Washington state at Ensign Chrysler on the corner of Yates and Cook streets.
"The Spiderman PT Cruiser is my grandkid's favourite," says Victoria PT Cruiser Club president Hans Fredericksen of a car that has the comic character painted on it. "It even has a Spiderman blow-up doll coming out of the sunroof."
Other cars on display -- if it doesn't rain -- include a Cruiser with a hot-rod air intake emerging from the hood.
The event -- including the hot dogs and hamburgers -- is free. Donations are accepted, however.
There is a $5 entry fee for participants. There will be prize winners in a variety of categories.
There will also be a silent auction for a scale model of the Oak Bay Police Department's PT Cruiser and a raffle. Money raised will go to the Tour de Rock for Cancer Research.
