Chrysler to End PT Cruiser, Seek Buyer for Equipment

Jan. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Chrysler LLC, pruning its lineup to save money, will stop building the PT Cruiser this year and is seeking buyers for the equipment used to make the model, President Tom LaSorda said.

Production “ends this summer,” LaSorda said today in a telephone interview. “Would we sell those assets? Yes. Do we have any offers to sell those assets? No. Would we be pursuing a buyer? Yes.”

Here's a thought for you:

Fiat.

It's all over the news tonight, that Fiat may be taking a stake in Chrysler, which will enable them to penetrate the U.S. market, while providing Chrysler with access to world-class small-car technology. Could Fiat buy the PT Cruiser assets? Maybe they wouldn't be building Cruisers - although one has to seriously question the wisdom of Chrysler killing its one compact at a time when everyone is concerned with what is going to happen with the price of gas.

This close to their announcement of the PT's cancelation, I wonder if someone might reconsider it, without the threat of bankruptcy quite so looming. Chrysler could do worse than canceling or postponing the demise of the PT, and instead create the next generation, using the assets of Fiat to build a more efficient car that can still be unique amongst its competition. And Fiat certainly has plenty of 'retro' in their DNA - this tie-up could, at the very least, hasten the debut of the Fiat 500, a car every bit as cool as the Mini (and probably a good place to start finally developing the Dodge Hornet sub-compact).

It was interesting, today--I was in my local dealer for an oil change and they had the new Dream Cruiser parked in the show room (it is ugly, btw, I hate that bling bling grill on it). Anyway, the salesman noticed I was looking at it and came over and we chatted about the PT--I mentioned how stupid I thought it was the Chrysler never redid the engine or built a hybrid PT. He replied "Oh dealers all over the country asked for a hybrid PT but Chrysler didn't listen to us." So I guess PT owners were not the only ones ignored. He said part of the reason the PT was probably killed was its gas mileage--which we all know is not so great for a 4 cyl car.

BTW, that Dream Cruiser has cheap feeling seats with some sort of stretchy lycra-like fabric on them. Ewww! What happened to nice leather seats?
