I understand the tooling is paid off, and I didn't expect a redesign. In fact I agree that it is a very difficult vehicle to redesign. But let's face it, the VW Beetle was basically unchanged for 30 years and managed to sell well. I personally think the economy and competition (read HHR) had more to do with the drop in sales than anything.
My hope was perhaps they could consider some new option packages, or alternative engines. They have a nice hybrid drive train in the works as well as sourcing 1.9L TDI VW diesel motors which are in the Mexico and EU versions of the Caliber, Compass, Patriot. They could also source some Fiat motors (1.4-1.8L) to get some serious boost in fuel economy (30 MPG + HWY).
Anyway, just the ideas I was thinking about.
