Cool Anti-theft Indicator Light-#19 in manual

I'm a new (2008) pt cruiser owner (just a few months), not under warranty and this little red light just came on and went off after I drove car for awhile and then came back on. Any suggestions about how I can troubleshoot to see if I can shut it off or should I just take it to mechanic or dealership.
This is a great site and I thank you in advance for your suggestions.
Kathy

If you mean a blinking red light, after you're out and you've locked the car with the keyfob, that's good: that would be the built-in car alarm, just saying it's armed and ready.

And welcome to the forum! Lots of good people here, and you'll find plenty of answers for all your Cruiser questions.

Thank you, looking forward to community. No, I don't have a built-in alarm, this is a pretty basic model of the pt cruiser. The indicator light is on all the time while I'm driving (just started that); Not sure what I should do at this point. It's got 40,000 miles, not under warranty, and Im a little intimidated by all these lights!!! (coming from a 1992 Plymouth van, it's all new to me!!!
Thanks for your reply.

The little RED light should be a picture of something like a picture of an a thermometer, battery, oil lamp or a car with the rear hatch open.

That will explain what the car is trying to tell you. A small red dot in the center dial is the alarm activation.

Tell us what the light is and we can go from there.

I have a 2008 and just looked in the manual, I can't find a #19 listed. Page 5 intro, lists a whole bunch of symbols, but I see no "round light" listed. I just turned the key on in my car, it went thru the initial test and the only light that is round IS the anti theft lamp.

Try doing the "key dance" to see if you get any codes. To find what the key dance check for the sticky in the performance section.

#19 "Theft Alarm Light - if equipped. Pgs 223, 233.
"This light (round) will flash rapidly for several seconds when the alarm system is arming. The light will begin to flash slowly indicating that the system is armed."

Thank you, in the manual on page 223 #19 is the anti-theft indicator lamp which is staying on while I am driving. I will try the key dance. That sounds like a good option for me. Thank you. I will let you know how it goes.

The vehicle "alarm" system actually has two functions. One is an alarm w/ sentry key and the other is simply a sentry key. If you don't have an alarm, you still have a programmable sentry key that's part of the immobilizer.

If your light is staying on while driving, there's a fault in your anti-theft system. I don't know if you'll have luck pulling such a code with the "key dance". You may need to take it to a Chrysler dealer to have diagnostic equipment hooked up to see what's wrong.
