Exclamation Power steering

What type of solvent or cleaner is good to use to clean out the clogged reservoir.

You can use engine cleaner, carb cleaner, and kerosene. To name a few.

How difficult is it to pull the reservoir tank out for cleaning? I'd like to do the same thing, my daughters car is making the famous "groaning" noise. It's a regular, base model 2001, so I'm not sure if I have regular power steering fluid or ATF+4, but I figured I'll switch to ATF+4 after I clean out the reservoir (and try to flush out as much of the old as possible). However, did Chrysler change the filter design on later models when they changed over to ATF? Will the ATF clog the filter any sooner than the regular clear power steering fluid?

Also, has anyone considered removing the screen (I know it's not a "removable" screen, but couldn't a person just break the screen out or punch a hole in it?) in the reservoir and going with an "in-line" filter (they list them at AutoZone)??

I have a 2001 PT and had the same grinding noise that seemed to be the power steering as well. I took it to my mechanic who is the absolute best mechanic I have ever used and he said it was the rack n pinion. I had it replaced and all is well. He said PT's are notorious for this. Do your own research with that in mind.
