Guess we should not complain about taxes anymore

Stats:

- German avg. household income (src: statista.de)
- before tax (2017): 60100$
- after tax, social sec, etc. (2017): 45682$
I wasn't going to guess Germany, but it was pretty obvious from those numbers that NJ must be your initials, and not indicating the state of New Jersey.

As someone with homes in the outer boroughs of NY and Maryland outside DC, I laughed at both those prices and the Connecticut ones. Oh, how I wish.

Here in the U.S. the property tax is paid mostly to the local town. It is a largest tax that most retired people pay. It is an unfair tax. People who live with their parents [or others] don't pay property tax. People who live in apartments pay only a percentage of the land value. [Indirectly through their rent money]. If a lot of land is valued at $70,000 and it has 7 apartments on it, then each renter pays on a $10,000 value. I have to pay on the $70,000 value AND have to plow my own driveway.

What a week of news !!

The Cohen Hearing was televised. This gave the world a little peek into how our government works.
Our president travels halfway around the world to make a deal with a Communist dictator. And comes back empty handed.
We had a successful rocket launch that docked with the space station. It has been 8 years! By next year we won't have to pay the Russians anymore, if things go as planned.
Payless Shoe stores are closing nationwide. I don't understand how someone would buy shoes without trying them on first. More jobs lost to Amazon. And the lost rent from the buildings.
Three other major stores are closing some of their locations.
A major hurricane hits down south.
Mother nature gave me a foot of snow the other night. Thanks a lot. First real snowfall this winter. [CT]
Ocean cruise liner nearly pushed over by 115 MPH wind gust. Probably exciting for passengers who didn't get injured by the tables and chairs sliding at them.
Tesla announces a small SUV will be shown next week at some auto show. There was no announcement date for the PT Cruiser electric/battery conversion kit.

From UPI; auto sales for the first quarter of 2019 are the worst in 5 years. Tax refunds for many Americans have declined, and some of those people use their refund to help finance a new car. Chrysler should post their sales soon.

The Boeing 737 max is grounded [USA was the last country in the world to do so]. WOW airlines went bankrupt. The airlines and airports are scrambling right now to move people.

Not sure where we are heading, but I know I'm worse off financially now compared to a couple of years ago. Between insurances, drugs, gasoline, fuel oil, electricity, food, etc. all going up and nickel and diming me, I've gone downhill.

Where I live the news is almost all positive. For me, having less coming out of my check for taxes has been great. When you have to pay in every year, refunds aren't a thing. And this year I'm paying a LOT less.

Car sales have been is a slump for a while now. What happens is that most folks, like me, got a new car back when the economy first got good. So we aren't ready for another one. Add to that the fact that folks are paying less taxes and getting smaller refunds, it's a double whammy.

For my family, things are much better than just a few years ago. Production is up where I work so the demand for engineers is greater. That drives up wages. Additionally, commercial property is selling very well and that drives the environmental work I do in my side business. That extra work killed me last year due to taxes. But this year, I'm getting to keep a lot more of what I worked so hard for.

Also, my two millennial kids never had it so good. My son does environmental and laboratory work and he pretty well has his choice of jobs. My daughter is out of college right now due to health issues. But she can still get what I consider great jobs doing retail. Currently, she's part time at an office supply box store helping customers with their computer needs. And the money is surprisingly good. She's even considering studying IT when she goes back to college. That sure beats studying English.

One of the really cool things is how much more prosperous some of the resort towns in Arkansas have become in last couple of years. Hot Springs has gone from a shady run-down hamlet to a thriving destination with lots of new businesses and attractions. My wife and I just returned from Eureka Springs. That little mountain hide-away is really going strong now but really knows how to keep it's romantic charm.

I hope all of this keeps going and that we get even more good news. At least where I live, we are really seeing an American revival of sorts.

There was an article in the CRUISER QUARTERLY about a company that built one.

I posted the text and pics awhile back here on this site.
