I'm not sure how the second gen heat is controlled, but on my 03, it's a cable. You have to remove the center plastic cover around the radio and heat controls in order to access it. The first thing you need to do is to make sure you have enough anti-freeze in the radiator and overflow.

As was already said, the first generation might be different but here's how that looks.....

The redesigned Second generation Cruisers have twisted strand cable that tend to kink behind the knobs. I straightened mine and if I'm gentle with the controls they keep working instead of bending

HI. I also have an '06. The main cover on the dash just unsnaps BUT you need to remove two screws in the centers of the vents first.

Here is a photo from my Field Service Manual. For some reason removing the screws was left out. I discovered that fact when looking at a stereo replacement guide, and it mentioned the two screws.

Attachment 19276

I re-installed the cover without re-installing the two screws and it's just fine.
