Default Back up beeping

I bought a 2003 GT Turbo from an old couple. When you put it in reverse a back up beeper sounds inside the vehicle. It's driving me nuts. Anyone have any idea how to disable that?

Welcome to the forum.
You might want to post and tell us about your PT Cruiser.

I would suggest putting the car in reverse and when the beep, beep beep of the reversing sensor starts up, follow the noise till you find the beeper and remove it.

Thanks _ it's 2003 GT Turbo with 89'000 kms 2.4l
There was a sensor strip attached to the back window that had warning lights on it. Green,Amber &Red. The longer it is in reverse, the lights would change and beep quicker. I removed the strip which lead into the 3rd brake light. It sounds like it's from back there.

Jack up the front of the car and use jack stands to support it,Block the wheels, pull the parking brake, put it in reverse, follow the sound with your ears, it will lead you right to it. It probably under the rear hatch cover.

Welcome to the forum

Did the color changing lights appear in the rear view mirror when you backed up? Sounds like a backup alert system that the previous owners had installed. Look closely at the rear bumper cover for any quarter to half-dollar sized sensors, there may be several, that may have been installed. You'll probably have to leave the sensors in place, or you'll have some unsightly holes in the bumper cover, unless you replace the cover.

You might have 2 different systems that the elderly previous owners had installed. The visual alert system generally doesn't emit a beeping when backing up, but gives you the lights that change colors the closer you get to objects.

The audible alert is generally meant to warn people behind the vehicle. They do make some back up light bulbs that incorporate an alarm when backing up. Have someone else put the vehicle in reverse and put your ear down by the backup lamps, and see if that's where you hear the beeping coming from, generally it should only be from one, if so, just replace with a standard bulb.

You should go to the New Members section and introduce yourself

Thanks Everyone
Yes, the colors changed but the sound comes from inside the vehicle. There is nothing on the bumper.
I did notice a white plastic round thing behind the 3rd brake light assembly.
Might that be it or is that part of the 3rd brake light?
It sure sounds like it's coming from there

That white, round thing is most likely what your problem is. I also have an 03 GT and mine doesn't have that thing in or near my third brake light. Pull that sum beech out and I'm pretty sure you'll stop hearing it.

Does your 3rd brake light flash a few times when the brakes are pressed? It could be a flasher unit or may be where the beep is coming from.
