Custom rear wiring question...
Hi, I apologize since this is almost like a word puzzle, but it's the only way to describe my current audio system.
On my factory stock 2006 pt cruiser head unit, I just installed polk audio db 3 1/2" speakers in the dask and kenwood excelon 6 3/4" units in all of the doors. I used xtc baffles behind every speaker and I must say I recommend them for improvement in sound quality and volume in the cabin, as well as for dispersing vibrations before they enter the door and dash frames.
I knew the overall bass response would decrease with this install while all other quality would improve. So, here's what I want to do . . .
I believe the stock 66 watt rating of the radio is sent to 4 channels. So, about 17 watts a channel. I'm guessing the front dash speakers are wired in parallel off of the front door speakers.
The stock dash speakers were 8 ohms and the front and rear door speakers were different, so I'm guessing the front door speakers were 8 ohms as well. I'm also guessing they were wired in parallel, which would mean factory load on the stereo deck was 4 ohms and now is 2, due to my aftermarket 4 ohm replacement speakers wired in parallel.
If I'm not mistaken, that new 2 ohm load effectively doubles wattage delivered meaning the dash speakers and front door speakers are now receiving 17 watts individually, as opposed to over the whole channel.
Now, I want to custom install a JL audio 6w0 subwoofer in my rear deck. The rms rating for it is 30-75 watts. I want to know if I can hook my right and left rear speaker wires into that individual subwoofer and what that would do to the ohm load on the deck and power delivered.
The wiring to the subwoofer would be like a V with the bottom of the V being where the speaker wire is connected to the subwoofer, in other words, the subwoofer terminal is the only place where the two sets of speaker wire would connect. The tops of the V are wires which are connected to the rear speaker wires before they connect to the rear speakers.
If I'm not mistaken, that would eliminate my right and left rear imaging, but up the power to everything in the rear and change the ohm load on the factory deck. I have no idea what it is rated for even though most are rated for 2-4 ohms. I want bass and a higher sound stage in the rear, but don't want an unsafe system.
Thanks for any help,
Zack
