Default Just speaker replacement?

Hi everyone, new PT owner here!

So, I have a 3 week old '08, I LOVE everything about my PT except the only thing I cant get over is how bad the base sound system is! I gotta say, the stereo is the worst sound I've ever had in a vehicle in 23 years. I'm not a sound system freak, quite honestly stock systems have been fine for me, but come on...

Anyway - since I have a year free sirius, I dont want to replace the unit just yet. Will replacing just the speakers for now get me a better sound range?

Welcome to the forum.

I'm by far not anywhere near an expert on sound systems but I don't think the system in the PT is that bad. In my 2001 I do have the Limited Edition with the highest option stereo that you could buy at the time which came with 66watts, the cassette, single CD and a 3 band graphic equalizer. The only thing I don't have is the 10-disk CD changer.

Chrysler made a few changes over the years in a cost savings venture so maybe they cut down on the sound quality of the speakers and head unit.

I did add an amplifier under the front drivers seat and an 8 1/2 Bass Subwoofer in the rear which made the sound quality even better.

There is a subwoofer that you can buy that fits directly into the left rear inside quarter panel so it doesn't take up any room in the rear.

Many owners have changed out their speakers so hopefully one of them will come along and let you know what they did.

I also moved your posting to the Sound & Security part of forum so more people interested in the sound system will see your thread.

Thanks, Crewzin!

Thanks for moving this - I must have missed the Sound section of the forum, sorry!

I have the base level head unit & speakers. single CD.

There seems to be no real high range to the sound at all, no cymbals, etc. If you play with the treb & mid, all you get is a tinny cheap sound. Never had this experience before in a sound system. My sound is just fine in my 06 Grand Caravan, though.

OK, that's where my equalizer must come into play. I can move that slide all the way up and get all the cymbals I'd want. So I think the head unit of the stereo plays a big part in the sound quality.

Again, many owners have changed out the speakers and head unit so maybe they'll come along and let you know what's happening.

So far, the biggest complaint has been that there's no input in the stereo for an iPod or auxiliary player.

Hi I got my PT Cruiser about 3 months ago, I have a 07 touring edition with the highest stereo option that it came with it... and the base and sound is great really nice sounding system. But I see you mentioned that you had the regular standard stereo and speakers..... so if you want to replace just your speakers I suggest checking out this website Crutchfield: LCD TV, Car Audio, Home Theater, Speakers, Plasma TV

When I had my little sports car I ordered speakers and a stereo from them and never installing a stereo and speakers in a car before I did it all by myself. They are great they will send you all the directions you need and usually depending on what you buy....... the speakers are just a simple plug and play installation because they come with a adapter attached to the speaker.

So again if you want check out Crutchfield: LCD TV, Car Audio, Home Theater, Speakers, Plasma TV and then look for the "out fit my car" button

I have used them a bunch of times and never a problem

I replaced the speakers in my '02 a few years ago. The OEM speakers actually sounded better than the new ones. I did add the Mopar subwoofer. Now that made a huge difference. There's one on ebay for sale now.

I have a 2006 and when I replaced the base single CD radio code REF with the 6-disk changer code RAQ there was a instant improvement in sound quality and range. No speakers were changed.

I have a 2001 limited with the CD/cassette. My right front door speaker is distorting quite a bit. I need to know what size it is. I also bought one of the OEM sub system but have not installed it yet.

Thanks for the replies, everyone!

It really is disappointing, since my Grand Caravan's system really sounds nice and I dont think thats a "higher end" setup.

Digitalpinscruiser - I'll give Crutchfield a look, I have a friend who swears by them. It's been a loooong time since I've tinkered with car stereos, but I'm sure its just like riding a bike, right? lol

MickRC3 - I might go with the RAQ eventually, I'm just trying to keep my free year of sirius, after that I'll just add the car to my regular sirius acct I'm already paying for.
