Default Subwoofer thoughts

Well I wanted to see if any of you had thoughts on a sub set up. I had been planning on using the Kenwood Woox as I am pretty sure it would mount in the area were the factory subwoofer would go on a 2002. The woox is a cool piece of equipment for systems that aren't for competition or anything like that. I went in to the car audio place that I frequent to demo it. He just happens to have a gently used JL W7 in a sealed factory box with a 500W JL amp. He said he would give the package to me for $250!?! Yeah, I had to force myself to walk out of the store without buying it right there. I told him I would let him know by tomorrow. Any thoughts on which way to go? I am concerned that the W7 would overpower the other speakers I installed, it is also a "family" car, so I don't really get to listen to music at more than an ambient level, though this might mean that the woofer wouldn't end up drowning out the other speakers. The woox sounded good, made me think they were running a decent 10" sub (no joke) not a "woox". The woox would make the most sense if I want to keep open as much cargo area as possible as it is one of the "family" cars, but a W7 w/ amp for $250? I could take it out of the car when cargo area was needed for that price. BTW in case it would effect your decision he offers a one year guarantee on his used products even if I install it myself. Let me know what you think or if you need anymore input to get the ideas going. If I don't get a direction I am probably going to end up with a crazy bass crunching ride.

Hey ucantcme,

Depends on if weather you need trunk space or not!

For me, I wasnt going to put subwoofers in my PT if I would have to sacrifice the PT's diverse functionality. I still wanted to have some access to the hatch area. I have built my own custom setup, with pioneer 8" shallow subs and a 400w pioneer amp. It can sound pretty damn powerful if you set it right. It's not overly powerful which is kinda nice. Also you dont really need big subs because you have a hatchback, not a trunk. The sound doesnt have to go through the trunk to be heard. If your looking for something that is powerful and adds a lot of depth to the music check out pioneer shallow 8"s. With them, you can still use the lower rack level in your hatch! Thats what really turned me on to them.

Check out the photo in my gallery to see what I mean.

Factory sub?? There is no factory subs. If you have an aftermarket reciever you can set the bass on your all purpose speakers to act as a sub, but its not the greatest by any stretch, plus it strains your speakers.

If you want to still maintain a lot of your functionality, then you will have a hard time finding a set-up that works for you, just because it has to be so shallow. It is still possible though! Mine works great. Idk, pioneer might make a box for it, because they manufacture the shallow subs. I found it to be a fun project to make my own box though
